Subject: aero disc cover question- easy on/easy off?

Hello all, am thinking about getting wheelbuilder disc aero cover for my 404's.  It looks like they are easy to install.

What about taking them off?  Is there any reason/condition to remove it? Do some people only use them for races? Are the fasteners one time use only? Extra fasteners? With the quality of the cover, how long are they expected to last?

Thanks in advance.

The two sheets are fastened by screws, so yes they can be refastened. If you only use them for races, they will last a very long time. I just bought a new one last year, only because after two seasons of races there was all kinds of nasty sport drink all over it.

I personally take my off between races but you can use it all the time.

Easy on, easy off...yeah after you take off the rear cassette. Careful with the cassette, it will come apart and then it's not easy on, easy off, just a word of caution.

If you get the disc cover it comes with valve extensions but not the crack pipe.

I only use my race wheel for races. I leave my disc cover on all the time. I do however bring my tools to the race site with me in case in the last minute I want to take the cover off i.e. it gets really really really windy.

I'm like Ron Popeil "set it and forget it"

Can you change a cassette? Then it won't be bad

And that's also easy with the right tool.

If you have the tools to change a cassette, that's all you need.  Adding and removing the cover is very simple.  They use plastic fasteners that can be reused.

Total time to put on or remove the cover for me is about 10 minutes.

You can certainly leave the cover on for training if you want.  But this would go back to the debate of why you would use your 404's for training in the first place.

Awesome, thanks for the replies.  I do have the tools, so it should be easy.  I am pulling the trigger right now.  And no, do not want to get into the debate of using them for training or not...Wink  Just really wanted to know how versatile it will be and test em in different conditions, wind, levels of climbing, etc.

On 404s I like to leave mine on and train on training wheels.

Aero disc cover has to be centered just right on my 404s so messing with taking on and off, and I prefer to just leave them on. I use a little electric tape to keep it centered on my rim.

Thanks Kathy, where do you put the electric tape, how many pieces, how long etc? Any available pics?  That way I don't have to figure it out the trial and error way.  Smile

Also, did you use it in the Florida wind?  How was it.

1 long piece around the outer edge of the cover. I forget the exact name of the tape (something-33?), but it's a type of electrical tape that's rather easy to work with and holds rather well.

Some people have used the tape only (no bolts) and done fine. They'll redo the tape a few times a year, I believe.

Yep.  Pretty straightforward as long as you are comfortable taking the cassette on/off.

A couple of tips:

Have a cardboard box or some sort of bowl that you can rest the wheel on/in once you have the first side positioned.  Some use a little masking tape to hold it in place, but I've never found the need.

Use a couple of dimes or pennies to do up and un do the male/female screw fixings.  A screwdriver tends to tear them up a bit.

Now a question of my own.....   does anyone actually use the little patches that they supply to go over the "valve opening"?

I took the "joker" from a deck of cards and taped it over the opening with electrical tape.

I prefer nickels to screw the connectors together. I used the stem valve cover thing once :-(

I recommend buying some extra small screws.  The plastic threads are soft and are very easily damaged.

Even better just throw those annoying things away.  They warp the disc and (IMO) are way more trouble than they are worth.  I use electrical tape to hold the cover on.  Much more smooth application and a lot easier to get consistently right than with the screws.

+1

I hate those screws.  I find tape works much better but if you are going to do it, use good electrical tape (3M Super 33+ or something like that) and be sure to clean the wheel surface you are taping to before putting it on.  The cheap stuff doesn't stick well.

I put 4 pieces on each side. Also watch the video they have on their website as it has tips that make it easier.

I buy the good electric tape by 3M.

I think you can see the tape pieces that are about 2-3" long in this photo over the edge of disc and rim. Look at top ZI as you can see the tape.

Thanks for posting Kathy!  Sweet ride! I will get the good tape like you and others have said.
