I could possibly see it moving once the contract is up, but I dont see it moving to Galveston. Thats a fun race and I will be there again this year, but I would rather it stay a HIM. Plus I personally like the early season 70.3 as tune up for IMTX ...

Now, living in North texas, I wouldnt mind seeing the race move up here and we have a pretty good location for it out in Grapevine. Make the Gaylord the host hotel, swim in Lake Grapevine, take the bike course west, out to Justin or anywhere out that way, and do a 2 or 3 loop run that finishes in downtown Grapevine. Logistics there are fairly straightforward ... you have a major airport literally minutes away and lots of entertainment options within a short drive. I dont ride out there, but it couldnt be that difficult to get a 112 mile bike ride on moderately traveled roads out that way, especially once you cross over 35W and head out into the country.

But thats just me giving it about a total of 10min thought! haha ... maybe we could get Rev3 or someone else to do a 70.3 up here. The only option we have right now is Prairieman

KeriKadi - 2012-11-21 7:52 AM Caufee Tawk.....So Florida and Arizona sell out in a minute and it loos like Texas will need a Schwaggle deal to sell out. I wonder if this will encourage WTC to move the date or location. Discuss.

I think it will sell out once everyone's A option sells out.

I think the location will probably move once the contract is up.  I wonder what Galveston's 70.3 deal looks like?  I'm sure they'd love to take on a full as they're already a tourist trap.  Move it into the 70.3 time of year and you are wetsuit legal too.  I just think mid May temps in TX scare off yankees.

True but I'd hope they'd change the run route, three laps (I think) for the 70.3 is ok, but six laps for the full would be brutal.

I'd rather them take the 3 loops back to 4 and get rid of the airport section for the upcoming year.  That section was brutal.

But yes, if you were going to do a full marathon at galveston you would need to expand the run course.  Also, lets face it that course is WAY to easy to cut and way too many out and backs.  The roads around moody are not that great though, so you might have to move the start location.

Also, I think I'd want a full with a mass start.  Maybe there is somewhere on the bayou where you could do that, but maybe not out of Moody.

Could Galveston host both a 70.3 and a full?  April and say October.

As of December 2nd, general entry to IMTX has closed.  BOOM.  It's slowly getting closer.

I was wondering how long it would take. Five months to sell out if you forget Arizona and Florida sell out in minutes.

Eh you have to consider FL and AZ are flatish, speed courses with generally great weather.  No yankee really wants to come to Texas in mid May.

Dude I know.  Have Florida or AZ in July and we will see how quick the milky skin people are to sign up.

With no more IMSG, it would sure be nice if WTC would move the race to late April. Average high/low temps in The Woodlands for May 18 are 87/68. Average temps for April 18 are 80/60. Seems like the issues around winter training are the same whether it's an April or a May race, but the shift to April would eliminate most of the concerns about heat/humidity and get rid of the two-tiered start for wet suit wearers.

Another consequence of this move would be its impact on the 70.3 race in Galveston......but that's about the only downside I can see.

Maybe as long as it does sell out, WTC will not see the existing date as a problem that needs fixing.

Mid April Would put it a week or two after Galveston though.

You would need to adjust Galvestons timing too or risk reducing the number of participants in the 70.3.

The other issues that nobody has really brought up is the winds.  I too was a proponent of moving IMTX to April but the more I have thought about it the less I like that idea.  The spring winds can be terrible in April but die down a lot come mid/late-May.  I would not want to ride that bike course on race day with a 15-20 mph southerly wind because that 40-something miles heading south back to The Woodlands would suck.

In summary, I'd rather run 26.2 miles in 95 degrees in May than ride 112 miles dealing with crazy winds in April.  My $.02.

Was IMTX wetsuit legal in 2012? I thought the water temperature in Houston around May would be too warm.

It was "Wetsuit optional" and the wetsuited crowd started 10 min after the non-wetsuited crowd with the cutoff's remaining the same. I am a WEAK swimmer who HATES cold water and I was more than fine without the wetsuit.

A couple of us from Dallas are planning a trip down to The Woodlands the weekend of 03/23-03/24 to ride/run the course. Wondering what tri groups have normal rides on the course on Saturdays and any information on their rides (start locations, times, etc). Or, if you can point me to the tri groups down there, I can try to reach out to them and get their ride information.

Thanks

I usually ride alone but there is a group that rides on Saturdays.  SouthCoastEndurance athletes start at around 7am and ride the course.  https://www.facebook.com/SouthCoastEndurance?fref=ts

You can contact "Tri on the Run" or "OutRival Racing". They might have something going on.

courtney_leone - 2013-03-11 11:19 AM I rode 75+ miles on the course Saturday. First half was great but then the rest was 20+ mph headwind uphill. Miserable. Hopefully not that bad race day. I know some wind is expected but I actually was riding significantly tilting to the right. Exhausting.

Saturday was brutal with the wind.  I rode in Katy, and between the crosswinds and headwinds, it was a long day.
