Good news, I think....They're planning on releasing the dam pretty soon. This should help drop the lake level rather quickly. With decent weather forecast long range, I'm pretty optimistic about everything....

Will keep you posted!!!

I guess they have to wait to release the dam until they won't destroy the town, no? Just hope there's not a horrible mess when the water recedes.

June, September, duathalon, whatever. As long as this doesn't turn into a 70.3 mile swim, I'm up for it. I'll just Sharpie up the shirt with the changes.

Just got off the horn with the Inn at Newfound Lake.

Their policy:

If you cancel 10 days out they keep 10%.
If you cancel < 10 days, they keep 1 night's stay.

Hopefully this won't be an issue but thought I'd throw it up here in case anyone else is staying there.

Ack! It's going to be wicked hard to motivate myself for my peak weekend!

I think I am the only person who would actually prefer the September date - my long rides have been garbage, so I don't feel ready. But I'm crossing my fingers it will be on time to benefit the people who actually trained properly.

Subject: NH Flooding May Bring Swarms Of Mosquitoes

And to add insult to injury...

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- As though the flooding itself wasn't bad enough, bug experts say the high waters could bring swarms of mosquitoes to New Hampshire during the coming weeks.

University of New Hampshire entomologist John Burger said that flooding can give rise to several breeds of mosquitoes whose eggs otherwise remain dormant along the edges of flood plains and drainage ditches.

He said the bugs will take flight in about two weeks.

The good news is that they only live for three or four weeks and generally aren't carriers of Eastern equine encephalitis. The bad news is the wetter-than-normal spring is likely to breed more mosquitoes of all species -- some of which do carry the disease.

Actually, I'm with you, Summer_2005.  A fall race might mean a chilly swim, but it would be nice, and I wasn't quite feeling ready for June 3rd, anyhow.  Maybe it'll work out in my favor...

My first thought when I heard it might have to be delayed was oh bummer...second thought...I'll be fitter and faster then so it may be a good thing.

The water stays warmer from the summer...I bet it would be warmer in September than in early June.

Which ever date it is, I'm there as I have a date with that devil hill....this year I have something to prove to myself. For the last year, improving at this race as been my #1 goal...do better, get faster, feel better racing and as a result not come in last again!

It is a difficult spot, but I know Keith and his staff will work hard on our behalf to make it work the best they can given the circumstances.

He is just in the worst possible spot, isn't he. Basically, he needs to be psychic. If the race is on and the area is a mess, people will be pissed. If he calls the race off and everything is cleared by race day, people will be pissed. I picked this race because of his awesome reputation - and this whole incident is showing it is well deserved. I doubt many race directors would be both trying to clear the original race date, planning a new one, and running interference with hotels simultaneously.

Is the devil on the run or the bike? Because I was planning on walking all the run hills, but the devil scares me a little. Not as much as a clown, though.

About mile 7 on the bike there is a very steep section that they have a women dressed up as a devil at with music blaring to help get you up.

On the run on the 1/4 last year, I recall one hill about 2/3 the way to the turn around plus one slight hill after you do the turn around to get to the main road again. The run wasn't to hilly it is the bike...just 3 hills.

If you go to the link Max posted up top, you can peek around the Mooseman forum and and get the elevation map...worst hills on the bike mile 7-9 and from 20-22...sort to to 24.

Subject: RE: Mooseman is a go!!!

Just got this email:

<<GOOD NEWS... we are pretty confident at this point that Mooseman WILL HAPPEN
on June 3-4. After speaking with the Wellington State Park Manager this
morning, he believes that the park will be in good enough shape to hold the
event there in a couple of weeks. Yesterday they released the dam, which
lowered the water level of Newfound Lake considerably, and although we are
getting more rain today, the long-term weather outlook looks good. So,
please prepare yourselves to race and don't cancel any travel arrangements.
We appreciate your support and understanding, and look forward to seeing you
at Mooseman.

The clouds broke on Friday, giving way to some sun this weekend, but we did have one unusual storm late this afternoon. Yep, that's HAIL!  I'm eager to hear how the lake is doing, which about an hour North of here.

It's sunny and dry today - as it was yesterday!  Saturday and Sunday are going to be mid-70's and Monday in the 80's!!  Now we're talking!  I'm going for a prep ride and possible swim on Monday at Wellington, if any BTers want to join me.  There will be a few folks from my tri club there.  We plan to meet around 10:00 a.m. in the park.

For those who have done the race before:

Anyone know if ForeRunner 101s work on that course? Just wondering if I should buy a cyclocomputer for my road bike. Also, are they cool with you swimming in the lake on Saturday afternoon?

I assume you mean swimming on race weekend?  As soon as the race is "mostly done," I saw people jumping in (last year it got into the upper 80's and sunny!)  I know they'll be switching the bouys around for the half, so as long as you don't get in their way, you'll be fine.

Yup, you can swim after the bikes get rolling along. Keep in mind, though, that getting into the park while the race is going is next to impossible. All of the parking will be full.

So, if you're going to do that, make sure you get there before the race, check it out, and then swim. One of the reasons packet pick up for the Half doesn't start until 2 is that no one would be able to get into the park during the race....
