Subject: Adverse Weather training - Am I crazy?

I really enjoy training (specifically running) in lousy, cold, rainy (even snowing) weather.  Am I nuts?

Yesterday was my 45 minute run - and when I left for the run it was snowing.  I ran 4.9 miles in 40 minutes - an 8:27 pace.  That is a pertty quick pace for me (and I was not trying to run fast).

I like the challenge of running in the cold weather - and love the looks of drivers as they drive by in their warm cars thinking "this guy is nuts"  LOL

I was just wondering if anyone else liked running in crappy weather?

I love running in the bad weather, especially snow! I spent all this year and last running outside, sometimes in the single digits. I don't think I missed any days due to weather. I just hate when drivers can't think enough to dodge the piles of slush right next to you!

Nope.  Not me.  Has to be sunny and perfect.  Preferably shorts weather.  No tighties for me this past winter at all, in fact only had layers on a few times.  Amen to that.  "Crappy" wx means getting on the bike in the basement.

I love running in the cold/rain/snow, what I don't like is wind at any temp.

Cold doesn't bother me, wet isn't ideal but I'll do it if it's warm enough. Cold and wet is where I draw the line, as that just plain sucks.

Same here.  I hate wind.

If you're crazy, so am I!  I've always gotten a kind of physical thrill out of running in crap weather--driving rain, dense fog, snow, wind, you name it. I ran when I was studying in Harbin, China when it was 25 below zero. Maybe it comes from doing a lot of hiking, climbing, and other outdoor stuff. My dad grew up in northern Michigan and he didn't consider weather as an excuse for not doing things, so out I went, to play, run, do chores, whatever. We ran in blizzards unless the snow became too high to run thru or we couldn't see where we were going.  I recall once as a teenager ending up in the middle of a field while running during a whiteout--as an adult I have (a little) more common sense. (Uh...we won't talk about the time I got caught in a typhoon.....)  What I don't like is running in the heat and humidity.....and I do it every day here. Sigh.

I think I always get a mental boost out of running in cold and/or wet weather.  Looking around and not seeing other runners makes me think that in some way this makes me tougher than my future competitors in coming events, giving me some sort of edge.  In reality it probably just makes me dumber, rather than tougher, as the other runners are probably running on a treadmill in relative comfort!

As much as I don't entirely "enjoy" running in bad weather, there's a certain sense of accomplishment after trudging through some terrible weather.  And I don't consider snow bad weather.  There are very few things as peaceful to me as running while its snowing out.  Plus, I find running tights much more comfy than shorts, so I welcome the cold.

It is getting old. Today was good, just cold. I did my bike and jumped off for the 8 mile run NP. I am willing and it looks like the weather is going to be cold and wet for the next couple weeks here in Everett. I knew what I was doing when I signed up for Courde alene. I should be pretty strong by then cause what doesnt kill ya only makes you stronger

Funny how many people responding in this thread are from the PNW (currently, or former). If we didn't train in crappy weather we wouldn't train... Add me to the list of people that like running in snow/rain. My favorite runs are during snow storms.

X2

I don't think I get in a good training run or ride when cold AND wet. My mental focus is way off as I curse the day, the stupid place where I live, why I decided to go outside, etc. Plus I do this for fun, and cold and wet just isn't fun.

The best way to avoid hating the wind on the bike is to get a power meter and ride by power, not speed.  Suddenly the wind doesn't matter much anymore.

I believe training in "challenging" weather is a great way to build your mental toughness.  Especially if you are training for a HIM or IM.  What if the HIM or IM race is just a week away (one that you signed up for a year ago) and suddenly the weather took a turn for the worse.  Would you DNS the race?  Of course not, but it probably wouldn't be your best race either because you were not mentally prepared for the conditions.  Keep moving forward! I grew up in Maple Valley, WA.  I remember putting on all the layers and pounding pavement at night in  the nasty weather during wrestling season.  Slush, cold rain, snow, whatever.  didn't matter, had to lose weight.  I think back about how fun those nights were.  although now i hit the beach with 70-80 degrees all the time whick is really sweet too

I was a rower in Seattle in High School. I trained year round in rain, snow, sleet and bitter cold. I actually prefer to run in the 40's over the 60-70's. That being said I don't ride in the rain at all. I know I should on occasion, but I just can't do it. I'd rather ride the trainer than risk Seattle drivers in the rain.

Nietzsche. I love that quote so much it's on my left arm.

I also love running in snow (at least that means it's not SUPER cold outside!) and rain. I draw the line at thunderstorms because I'm afraid of being struck by lightning!

Love the tattoo--OMG if I had one sentence to summarize my life, that would probably be it!  I know you get plenty of chances to "strengthen"--grew up not too far down the road (Oxford, OH), often raced in Cincinnati, and more than a little familiar with the "challenging" climate there--hot, sticky summers, long, wet winters, wacko spring weather, hail, tornadoes, etc. Most of my really tough running memories involve long runs with wind and/or snow, and this long run route out in the country where you could see up ahead for miles. Slog, slog, slog, make incremental progress across vast landscape while running into the wind---I know it's helped shape me as an athlete and a person. Kudos to you for sticking with tri training (and IM training-wow) with all that!

I prefer to race (running only) in cold and wet weather. It totally removes the overheating element. I also don't mind running in snow or rain or other crappy conditions because I hate the dreadmill so much.

Biking? I'll ride in the rain if I have to, but I don't prefer it. Ridden in snow once. That was also the last time

I did 16 miles in the snow on Sunday.  I have done a marathon in 40F temps with rain the whole way.  Most of my races, however are in the heat, so in the summer I train in 95-100F temps to prepare for race day.  I run in wind a lot, but can't like it.

Yes, our weather here is insane!!! I can run in winter gear one day and shorts and short sleeves the next, especially in spring!! We had a super mild winter though - not even one day where school was closed. I did bag one long run when all the roads/sidewalks were a sheet of ice, though. The summers are the worst. I did a tri last year where the heat index was 109 and the humidity was typical 'nati stickiness. Blech!

Thanks for the support.
