Subject: I Didn't Die!!!

Well folks, I did it! Completed my very first Tri!! First I want to say thanks to all of you for commenting on my posts and offering encouraging words. You guys and gals are awesome!! OK, on to the gory details.

I had a goal of anything under 2 hours (and obviously not dieing) and finished in 1:57:30!!

I did the swim in 5:19 and found that to be the easiest part. The race was in a pool and I think I could have done better but I kept running into people. But that was fun and I even paused to smile at my wife so she could get my picture. I just wanted to have a good time, and I did.

The bike ride was not good. I don't have a bike of my own and trained at the gym on the stationary bikes so I rented a road bike for the race from a local store. Well, the bike for some reason wouldn't get into a low gear so I couldn't get a nice speed up and was just pedaling away and going nowhere fast. Everyone that I passed in the swim soon came flying by me. After I realized I couldn't do anything about the bike I just decided to take in the sights around me. What a beautiful day it was. Bike ride ended in 1:12:30!

My least favorite part was last......the dreaded run! My legs were give out from trying to pedal so much to get speed that I resigned my self to go SLOW and just enjoy the atmosphere. I had to walk a little but that's ok. The course only had one water station for the entire tri and that was at the 2 mile mark of the run, so I stopped and drank about 2 or 3 gallons of water. The run ended at 39:50.

It was a blast coming across the line and I had a terrific time. I will do another one but not without my very own bike. I have already started looking (Dang those things are expensive!). Thanks again folks, you all are the best. I will add photos from the race to this thread when I get home today. Talk to you all later!

I did my third tri last weekend and can feel what you went through.  The swim kills me.  Your time was great.  I did my last one in 8 minutes.  My form is good but I get exhausted after about 150 years and have to stop and rest.  I need some advice on how to train for the swim so I don't get so tired.  Help me there if you can.

I felt bad hearing about your bike experience.  I bought my bike on Bikesdirect.com.  There is a wellington on there for $400.  Not a tri bike but it will get you by.  Just make sure the size is right.  Go to a professional and get sized.  Then after you get the bike have a professional fit it to your body.  Make sure you eat something every 20 minutes on the bike.  That will help fuel you for the bike and the run.  Your bike should be just a solid ride.  Let us know how the next one goes.

Great job!  It will get better and you will continue to "not die".  Regarding the bike, yes they can be expensive but know that you don't have to have the latest, greatest carbon bike.  The most important thing with the bike is that you are comfortable and that it fits you.  (Also, understand that everyone will tell you that your seat is too high.  Ignore them, unless it is.)

Cheers,

-George

I did all my training at the local YMCA. I swam in the pool and trained by just increasing my distance each week. Started with 200 meters on week one, 300 meters on week two, etc. and by the end of month 3 I was swimming 1000 meters pretty easily. I think its more just geting the body used to going the long distances. I had a partner in the pool that taught me how to do flip turns to decrease time and he also made me seim "all out" on certain lengths to increase my speed. It was fun and I enjoyed it. Hope this helps you. Have fun!!
