Last November I had a crash and broke my left scapula.  I was really just getting back into good shape with my running, biking and swimming and had another crash yesterday.  This time I broke my left clavicle and two ribs.  Very discouraging.  I hope my whole season isn't ruined before it starts.

The first one I was riding with another guy and he hit the brakes while in front of me due to a maintenance vehicle in front of him and when he went to go around a car was coming the other way and my front wheel got tangled with his rear wheel.  The one yesterday I was on a country road by myself and there was no shoulder on the right and a line of potholes around 18 inches from the edge of the road and i was riding in between.  In hind sight, I probably should have gotten out of my aerobars and gone for more control under the circumstances.

Sorry to hear and hope you heal up quick. And thanks for sharing how the crashes happened. I always read these posts to see if there are any learning points. I'm sure others do the same and I feel that's one of the values of forums like this. Thanks again and good luck.

Man, if you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any luck!

So sorry for your injuries.

Heal fast.

Ouch, I hope you heal up soon. There is a lot to be said for learning bike handling skills from roadies, mountain bikers & Cyclocross riders. Not saying it would have prevented these occurances, but one of the first rules of group riding is "don't cross wheels". The second is "hold your line" You may have been going to fast to change what happened when your buddy put the brakes on in front of you...but the lead rider also needs to be aware that swerving can have disasterous consequences to the person behind him.

Get better fast and get out of the aerobars when in technical situations

That is some bad luck!!!  I hope you heal soon, those shoulders are taking a beating.  I too, think it is good to hear what causes accidents and possible hindsights - we all want to stay off the pavement if possible.

Maybe get some training wheels?

Seriously though, that truly sucks, man. Heal up fast!

After you're healed take the USBA Road Handling skills class. I can't tell you how beneficial it was with all sorts of issues we run into on the road.

Ugh. That is terrible. I am so sorry to hear this.

For now, focus on recovering. Take it easy. Try not to be discouraged, although it is difficult I'm sure. You will bounce back. It takes time and quiet, patient determination.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about your injuries. I, too, just recovered from my first crash in which I broke my left elbow, my right hand, and 3-4 ribs. I am back at it now...did I mention double hip replacement two years ago as well? If I can do it, anyone can...training now for IM National Harbor 70.3.

I always hate to hear about other riders crashes. I'm going on six months of missing two teeth I broke in half in my own last bad crash. Luckily the helmet saved my life as my head hit the pavement. Get better soon and get back on that bike!

I haven't checked the bike yet.  I didn't notice anything obvious when I gave it a cursory look after the crash.

I checked out my bike and it looks fine except for some abrasions on one of the brakes.  Man, I'm WAY more sore two days after the accident.

That totally sucks and I hope you heal fast!  I had my first crash on my road bike in October, crossed a wheel with my husband when he slowed in front of me and I had taken my eyes off of his bike in front of me for what only seemed like a second.  I was very lucky that I didn't break anything, just a lot of road rash, but I did crack my helmet and had a concussion.  I'm hoping that's my last bike wreck.  Aero bars can be scary, you have to watch the road like a hawk.  I'm still a bit timid in mine even though the wreck happened on my road bike.  Just learn from our mistakes and move on I guess.

It looks like I dodged a bullet.  I had a follow up with the doctor this morning and my clavicle fracture is way at the end and not displaced and should not stop me from training.  He said the cracked ribs will also not stop my training, but my limiting factor for the next 3 months or so will be difficulty taking deep breaths without pain.  I have follow up x-rays in 6 weeks but he said I should be able to make my first scheduled race the 3rd week in May.  I'll attempt to get back on the trainer this evening.

Good news.  But I can tell you from experience that the cracked ribs will probably start to feel worse before they feel better.

Now that is some serious HTFU.

After reading this you won't find me complaining about my intervals tonight.

Wow.. sounds eerily similar to my injuries a couple years ago, broken left clavicle and 3 cracked ribs + punctured lung.  I couldn't train at all for about 6 weeks while the ribs healed up, there was just no way.  The clavicle break didn't cause issues but apparently i jacked up my shoulder also which I didn't find out until later on when they okayed me to try to lift my arms up.  Things are about back to normal though, luckily I can still swim although my shoulder does experience some minor discomfort every now and then.

Sorry to hear about your crash and hope you heal up quick!
