I just got a new pair of Brook Ghost 4s today and have a half-marathon tomorrow, would you wear them? I'm not prone to blisters so I'm leaning towards yes.

I've taken long runs in new shoes twice.

Back in '83 I got some Saucony Jazz which I took out on a 13-miler. Destroyed my feet.

This past summer I took a 10-miler in Altra Instincts with not so much as a hot spot.

I would lean towards "no", but YMMV.

Not unless I had no other shoes to wear.  Not sure why you're even considering it.

Are you older shoes causing you problems? If not, why change for a race?

NO Rules of running... NEVER Race in a new untried pair of shoes. you trained for it why take any chance of having a possible unknown equipment issue, go with what you have been training in another 13.1 miles isn't gonna kill them.

I have two pairs of shoes that I run in right now. I know it sounds crazy that I'd consider this, but my two other choices are either a different pair of Brooks that I've had a while (getting pretty old) and a pair of almost new Nike Vomeros. The Vomeros have been leaving my legs feeling very tired after every run. I always liked the soft feel of them but it just seems to be too much right now. Lately I've been wearing the Brooks and they leave me feeling better but they just have a lot of miles on them. Not wearing them isn't a big issue for me, I was just wondering if I'd regret it before I was done if I chose too.

If you have to ask the question then you already know the answer.  Go with your gut, use the old shoes.

If they are the same kind of shoes I wore prior to this and I could get a couple miles on them the day before the race....yes

otherwise, no

you know the mantra is "nothing new on race day".

I can tell you that none of my experiences have ever supported this, as I've run in new shoes, swam in new wetsuit, ride a new bike every race (I rent), run in new shorts and new top.  It has all turned out just fine.  Intelligently, I understand why they say it, though.

My advice would be to use your old shoes and let the new ones be until you have them broken in.

get out tonight and run a 13.1 break in session for the shoes and you should be good for the race!

ETA: make sure you go sockless

I'm a subscriber to the "nothing new on race day" theory.....especially shoes.

The ONLY time I'd ever race in the new shoes was if they were *exactly* the same shoes - same brand, model, size.  Exactly the same as what I've been training in.

A friend was in New York for the Marathon one year and his Dog ate the running shoes he was going to race in.  He started to panic but then got the exact same shoes at a local store and ran in those.  He had no problems at all.

But only the exact same shoes ...

Bill

I wouldn't do it.  There are too many unknowns.  I once raced with a new pair of Yankz in my same running shoes.  The old pair were looking pretty bad and like they might break apart on the next run.  Big mistake!! I ended up with them way too tight, my toes went numb, had blisters on my heels and arches, and ran the slowest 10K of my life!  What seemed harmless at the time definitely wasn't.

Stick with the old shoes.  Break in the new ones next week, after the race.

I would not.  I have put 100kms into these shoes and they are very FIRM.  Unless you are used to that a marathon would leave your feet sore and possibly injured.

I would say no.  I don't care about blisters.  For me, when thinking about a new shoe, I worry more about injuries caused by overuse in a new shoe.  You can possibly wreak havok on your legs by going 13 miles in something new.  As alwayas, just my opinion.  Good luck in whatever you do!

Rule1: Nothing new on race day!

Rule2: Nothing new on race day!

Rule3: Nothing new on race day!

To make this clear, I even wouldn't wear a shirt, hat, short, sock that I haven't trained in before on race day.

Why?

Because:

NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY!

Well, I did NOT go with new and I can't complain. Now I have a month to break them in for my next half marathon.

Thanks for keeping me from making a mistake.
