At least you know it is going to be cold a couple of days out so you can plan accordingly. But that is nasty cold. I was in the ocean playing around earlier this week and my legs were hurting from the cold after a few mins. Granted, I wasnt swimming but it is really unpleasant to be in that cold water. Do you have swim gloves? Neoprene cap? Booties (and no, you dont lose your man card if you put em on in 52 degree water)? I dont have any of those things unfortunately or I would fed ex em over to you  for the race! All I can say is better you guys than me! :-)

You might want to check on the gloves, I'm pretty sure they are not legal for a swim. You should have received an email last week from Set Up concerning the cold water and what was allowed per USAT.
Good luck to everyone racing, at least it won't be called " the bake at the lake" this year

Found this on line,

The survival expectatives for an average person, with no special equipement, in water over 22ºC, 72ºF, is said to be so long that, that person would die due to another causes than hypothermia. If water is below 12ºC, 54ºF, survival expectative is around halve an hour or 20 minutes. In water below 5ºC, 41ºF, it is measured in minutes.

I would expect several brain freezes if you dont have a hoody...

At the very least I would wear several swim caps. Guess you guys won't be rockin' the speedos this year!

they say to stay tuned. They must be giving some thought to cancelling the swim. I might have to go boadyboarding tomorrow down here at wrightsville. The 55deg ocean should feel balmy.

Wetsuits now mandatory according to Set Up Events.

Neoprene hats and booties are allowed also.  USAT rules prohibit the use of neoprene gloves.

Kill me now, I got a wetsuit because I was worried about the expected low 70s high 60s.
I'm only 16, but it looks like I'll be writing my will tomorrow.

I hate the cold but will be very sad if they cancel the swim.  That would be just so lame.

Wear wet suits, caps, booties and then wrap yourself in some HTFU

Good Luck to all competing in the White Lake Half tomorrow.  Those who complete the swim should receive a special "Icebreaker" award.  I was supposed to do the sprint on Sunday but have wimped out.  You are truly "Hard-core".  I will watch the results online and will be cheering for you all (Especially japarker24).  Bob

I just swam about a half an hour over by the marina...definitely better than it was two weeks ago. The lady at the marina checked the temp while I was there...55*. It was tolerable though.

I routinely swim in Jordan Lake in temps below 60. My last two sims there were below 55. The key to getting through a cold swim is to just keep going. If you stop to adjust, you will tense up. Make sure you get in a warm up so you won't be shocked. I have also found that Vaseline is a great tool for keeping the cold out of your face and hands, You will still be cold, but not quite as much. Rub on a thick layer before the start. Your feet and hands will be a bit numb at the exit, so be mindful of that. Overall, have fun! This is one of those days you can look back on and say "Yeah, I did that ." Good luck to all!

Those who did the swim congrats!! That is was unreal!  A hoodie was the best 30 bucks I ever spent in my life!  I learned if you need to get warm in a wet suit take a pee!     I don't know how many times and looked up and said where the heck am I!   The Vols.  were great! One kid ran me down on the run  to give  me a gel I asked for!!!  Talk about awesome!  I am sure looking forward to a week off after that.  Great job to all those who did the Half.

Congrats to all who braved the swim. I have not done to many OWS but I hope that I don't have to do another one like that anytime soon.

Oh yeah. For anybody reading this and wondering. Hwy 53 SUCKS. I think that last 20mi took me about 5hrs. Well that is what it felt like.

Did anyone get mile splits on the run with a GPS. I just had a stopwatch and was wondering if the mile markers were somewhat accurate?

I didn't have a GPS, but i can tell you ( and this was when i was still coherent) that from mile 4-5 was about 1.25 miles or a little more, based on my mile times.

Daryn,

My Garmin 910 had the run at 12.85 miles.  I think everything was pretty close until the turnaround but they changed the location of the timing mat.  It should have been closer to the intersection of White Lake Rd and Hwy 53 (there was even a turnaround marked on the pavement but then painted over down at that spot).  On the way back to the FFA center, I would pass the mile markers then a little later my Garmin would indicate the mile splits.

Alan

Edit:  Stacey's Garmin had the run at approx 12.65 miles.

Thanks Alan.

I actually only ran to the 7mi marker and the turnaround was at 7.4. So I guess up until that point, my splits were about right.
