UC Santa Barbara Triathlon (Kendra's Race 2012)
54F / 12C
Total Time = 1h 48m 58s
Overall Rank = 231/311
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 10/13
Pre-race routine:

Came into this race planning on just having fun and not destroying myself... basically test swim and run improvement and enjoy the new tri bike. Race hard enough to know I could have gone a bit harder. Alota collegiate from several universities were racing so the really youngbloods/alumni/local tri club will most likely take the top finishing spots. =P

Packet pickup day:
Surveyed course as much as possible. Saw the lagoon and part of the run course there. Bike started on bike path so unable to survey bike route so just used Google Earth.

Race day:
Got up early, ate some apple sauce and a Clif Bar. Sipped some watered down Gatorade Perform. Set up transition area and chatted with other racers. Helped 3 1st timers resolve some of their problems and nervousness. =)
Event warmup:

Got into the COLD (52F) water asap. The walk there was rough on my soft feet. I should buy some disposable flip flops. Swam around for at least 15 minutes. Put my face in the water did some sprints to get the breathing comfortable.

  • 880 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards

Water was VERY COLD. Thank goodness for my recent OWS practices. The 15-20 minutes of warming up before my wave start paid off. My swim has improved since last OWS segment of a triathlon. Getting bumped did not bother me at all where my strokes ended up disrupting others. There was a lot of kelp! I think it took 90 seconds climbing the steep stairs to T1, I walked the 2nd half of it since I did not want to burn that match this early of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Really try to swim hard the first 100-200yards. I did not do that here despite my recent swim race simulations. Argh!!! Why did I forget??? Also must not swim too far off to where the swim exit is. I think the waves pushed me out a bit and I lost some of my sighting. Try to maintain composure coming out of water. I was a bit dizzy and had a hard time unzipping. Possibly due to hands being cold and lacked normal dexterity. >.<
Transition 1
  • 05m 50s

Super slow T1. =( Got a little dizzy coming out of the water. Poor dexterity trying to unzip. Steep stairs... ran half and walked half. Wet and grassy T1. Dizziness still lingered a bit but went away by the time I was ready to head out for the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Swim in OWS more and practice unzipping with poor dexterity whenever hands are very cold.

Race pace in between hard and comfortable. Handled ascents really well. Never really felt the legs burn too much. Stayed in aero as long as I could but got up enough times to get body feeling comfortable and not scrunched too much. Muscles near triceps and head supporting muscles still need training! Really bumpy at many parts especially when returning to campus and using bike paths there.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except make sure multisport mode is started correctly before leaving T1!
Transition 2
  • 03m 24s

Felt lower back pain/soreness. Could this have been caused by being in aero position longer than in training rides??? I've never felt this in any of my races before today. It couldn't have been because I wore my race number belt since it was not on really tight. Tried to stretch out back a bit to make soreness go away but it didn't so I just continued.
What would you do differently?:

Flying dismounts with feet out of shoes?
  • 29m 6s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 22s  min/mile

Never ran a race on trails so I went with slightly slower than 10K as I was also testing my new race shoes. Did not want to get injured and besides, the course was very rolling and had many spots where an accident can happen if not paying attention.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except race faster and try some LockLaces? (Thanks Rookies, you know who you are, hehe!)
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and ate oranges, bananas, recovery drink, and water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Misconfiguration on 910xt multisport mode. Testing new bike and new shoes. >.<

Event comments:

I would have enjoyed my first tri bike race test on smoother surfaces. =P Planning on racing Oceanside 70.3 next year so I don't think I'll be able to race this one again until it fits. =)

I didn't start multisport mode correctly in the 910xt so I was forced to go by RPE. I lost a few seconds and speed trying to figure out why it wouldn't change screens. I should have hit Enter before! Argh!!!
