Meulen - 2012-12-06 8:32 AM I'm planning my road bike upgrade in the next couple months.  Up until recently I was stuck on getting the new Cervelo S5.  But, I recently saw a BMC TMR01 and was pretty intrigued!  Anyone have any thoughts on the 2 of those?  Also, have any of you ridden the new electronic shift?  I'm really torn as to whether or not to go with that or stay with the old mechanical and upgrade wheels and get a power based crank.

Never heard of electronic shift! does it shift for you like in a car? sounds like it might be hard to fix if it broke.

Happy Thursday All!

more like a paddle shift car

quiet in here.........chirp...chirp!

Weather turned here finally.  I got a good ride in Saturday even though it wasn't that warm.  Sunday rained and was 40ish so got nothing but a trainer ride done there.  Hope some of you out east enjoyed some of that warm weather that rolled through.  We finally lost our cat on friday too.   That cat has been knockn' on the door for a while now.  Never easy though.  Bad start to the weekend for sure.  My poor wife is still a mess.

Sorry about your cat Brian, I know our pets are family members and are always missed when they are gone.

I was away this weekend, went the the NY Giants vs. Saints game.  Interesting watching a football game when you really don't care about the outcome.  Although, since my hosts were Giants fans, it was the polite thing to do to cheer on the home team.  Other than the rain, it was a nice weekend away!

Brian - so sorry for your loss. I hope your week gets better.

Ken - that sounds like a fun weekend!

Finally warm enough to run outside today!  It was snowing lightly with no wind - it was nice!

Brian - I'm very sorry about your cat.

Training- I'm keeping on, keeping on. Rebuilding run base and restarted Jorge's winter plan. I took a new 20' CP test and was thrilled to 1)finish without bonking halfway through the test, and 2) beat my summer average by 20 watts.

New bike - I'm starting planning for picking up a road bike in January. Any buying tips would be welcome. I only have my tri bike right now. So, I've made some choices that will drive the road bike options. I have a Quarq SRAM Red compact crankset with a GPX bottom bracket and I want to be able to switch it back and forth across bikes. I dont know what a GPX BB is, but i know it rules out frames using BB30. Also, the Mavic wheels that i use when the deep race wheels aren't on are in fine shape. I've also grown to like the adamo saddle. I'm guessing that its not economical to buy a whole bike, then take off a bunch of components to match my existing group. So, do you think i should work with the bike shop to buy a frame, and have them build the bike?

9/10 times it's more expensive to build than buy.  The mfg's almost give away the components on new bikes and frames are really marked up.  You'd be better off working with your LBS on giving you credit for things you don't want and having them swap for things you do want.  They will usually work with you on that.  Oh....and you have a GXP bottom bracket.   Cervelo's BBRight also works with that with the proper adapter, but BB30's are out

I got into the pool last night after a week hiatus with sinus issues.  Was pleasantly surprised!  I've been working on balance and keeping my hips higher in the water.  2 of my 50's last night was clocked at or under 42".  That's 2" faster than I ever remember going.  I was easily swimming withing 5-10" of T-pace for my 1000m cool down too.  Next weeks T-pace test should be interesting!  I need to play with finding another nose plug though.  The one I have starts slipping off around 800m's into a long set.  I got the slightest bit of water in my noise last night and my bike workout was a  snotty mess!  Allergies really kicking my butt recently!

The other option, which isn't necessarily cheapest, would be the Trek Project One.  You can go on line and do it on your own and have it shipped to a local Trek dealer or preferably you go to the local Trek dealer and cut a deal with them and they would have a computer (or I think you can still use your own) and put the equipment on the bike that you want.  I know their Speed Concept line is GXP, not sure whether that carries over to the road line or not but it would make sense.

I have never heard of TrainerRoad so I am interested in hearing what people have to say.

I have heard of Trainer Road and what I have heard is positive but I do not have any first hand experience.  I did find a thread on it using search in the Tri Talk forum.

Here is the link.  It seems most in this thread find it worth while.  I am traveling this week (again! Yell)  but if I get some down time later this week or next I will dig into it.  It may be worthwhile for me as well.  Anything to make trainer time less boring!

How is everyone's weekend going?

I hope the rain/snow holds off for you this morning Adam!

I am kind of surprised that there hasn't been any information on the new mentor groups.

Not bad here.  Weather kinda sucks so been stuck indoors, but still getting stuff done.  Had my swim analysis today with another coach I used to work with in computrainer classes.  He gave me some stuff to work on, but overall said I was already doing pretty good.  He thinks it's more about time in the pool to get where I want to be than anything.  That was good news!  Had an ugly xmas sweater party last night at my current coaches house.  That was a blast, but it was hard getting up at 4:30am for my swim this morning!  Good thing the weather sucks today anyway, since I have to be at my Grandfathers birthday party this afternoon.  I don't think I would have been home on time if I rode outside.  I'm planning on getting a trainer ride in later today and maybe a Kettlebell workout.  Next week should be short but mostly testing stuff.  Another FTP test on the bike and another 1000 meter TT in the water for T-pace.  Hope all is well!  Happy training!

I am thinking about getting my hubby some kettlebells for xmas - but don't know much about them.  If I was wanting to only get 2 or 3 what weight would you all suggest?  He wants to get some strength training in before his Grand Fondo in June but has never been much into weights so nothing too heavy.

I have a couple and enjoy the workouts I do with them, but would enjoy hearing from some of you that do more a complete workout with them as I tend to do more traditional weights with some swings thrown in.

Iceman uses kettle bells all the time maybe next time he stops by he can chime in.

Did my 5K today. I was off my pace for a personal best but still it was a good race. Luckily the rain and snow held off, so it was just cold and windy. I placed 61 out of 361. I was really surprised at the turn out given the conditions at race time. Overall it was fun even though it was pretty cold. They asked that you bring a toy to donate and they ended up with quite a haul so all in all it was for a good cause.

Nice job Adam!

Robin. I just started doing the KB's. Ice would probably better, but my coach had me get a single 20lbs bell. I ended up getting 2 for some of the stuff we do. It comes in handy.

Hmmm, it would appear we were archived.  So, regardless what they do going forward it would seem as of now we need to start new.

I will figure it out and post a link to the new group here. I have seen existing groups almost fill up before even going public by past members linking into the staging area.
