mmrocker13 - 2012-04-02 12:15 PM I launched a bottle once when going over railroad track, right as the race officials were passing me on the motorbike. I did go back and get the bottle, but still got dinged with an abandoned equipment penalty.  I was a bit annoyed, as it was a course PR for me, but it is what it is.

The penalties should be stiffer for this.  Those bottles are a hazard that can really ruin someone's day/season.

For everyone who drops a bottle or just for those who don't go back to get it?

If I can mountain bike 20 miles in the rockies on single tracks and not once drop a water bottle, then I don't think it's too much to ask for a road biker to keep it secured. (says the guy with 0 miles road bike experience)

I've never lost a bottle mountain biking, and my total there is more than 0.

?? I didn't THROW it...The little velcro strap keeping it between the aerobars wasn't enough to secure it. it jarred loose when I went over the tracks, and flew into the ditch. FWIW, in 10 years of racing, that is the ONLY time it's ever happened with my aero bottle (first race with new bike, new bars, and new adapter...old bottle), and I've never lost one on my regular road bike or MTB frame cages.
