I'm having a rough week. I'm on my second week in a row of attempting to cram my training into the week because I've got things to do over the weekend (Vegas last weekend, drill this weekend). It's draining trying to fit it all in.

Back to normal next week, though.

Elaine - good luck getting it all in - yesterday was the day that the past year finally caught up with me - I slept in fairly late, had a giant sandwich for lunch and then took a little nap - I did not wake up until 5pm. Today I am beginning to feel back to normal. I am going to get an OWS in a few minutes, then a massage this afternoon. Tomorrow is probably a hike over the dunes to Lake Michigan. I am starting to feel a little sorry I did not bring my bike with me, but only a little. I do love riding here.

This fall and winter I am planning to some longer climbing/descending rides, with the longest being a 200k with 16,000+ feet of climbing and next year possibly longer. I have a half dozen pairs of clincher training wheels, and a set of zipp 808/1080 tubulars that I race tris on. I would like to maybe treat myself to a new pair of wheels that I could use for these kind of group rides on my road bike. I weigh 155lbs. Anybody have any recommendations or tips on what I should be looking for/thinking about before I crack open my piggy bank?

TankBoy - 2012-07-26 11:20 AM Hi Arend - welcome to the group - I am a long-time fan of your contributions. Just read your thread in TT about derailuer adjustment - glad you got it worked out. It is funny, but there is nothing more empowering on the bike than knowing exactly how your drivetrain works.

I know right?  I thought I knew how to make the adjustments but I had it so messed up I had to reset.

Hey Ryan - we are on Lake Leelanau outside of Traverse City. My wife's dad grew up here and most of her extended family still lives on the lake. We get up here as often and as long as we can. You are a couple hours south of here, right? Seems like I remember coming through your neck of woods years ago when we used to drive back and forth from Chicago?

And on a side note, I'll rant on what would have made interisland travel so much better...

We had a ferry (called the super ferry) that would travel between islands.  3 hour ride, $60 per person one way, but for an additional fee (I think $50), you could also bring your car on.  3 hours from Oahu to Kauai, or Oahu to Maui.  And would have been 6 hours from Oahu to Big Island.  The great thing was that you don't need a rental car, and you can also load your car up with whatever you want.  Bikes, coolers, fishing gear, tents, scuba gear, etc.  It would have made interisland travel so much more feasible for locals.

But, for political reasons, long story short, it got shut down after less than a year.  Now imagine trying to go on a camping or fishing trip to another island.  With all the excess baggage fees, it's simply not worth it.

I always wondered why every time we'd go there would be a ton of folks coming home from Vegas. I thought the super ferry died due to environmental issues, ie whales

Whales and the reef was the "public" reason.  The government screwed up because they fast tracked the program without completing the envioronmental surveys prior.  But the real reason it was shut down was because the the car rental, airline, and shipping industry would have seen decreased revenues.  They have a strangle hold on us.  Using the superferry would have allowed small local businesses to expand their ability to export to other islands.  Imagine small bakery's, farms, and other shops being able to take a van full of thier products over to the other islands for $200 round trip.  They drive their van off the ferry and start delivering, and come back the same day.

We went to Hawaii in 2010 for our honeymoon (we spectated IMWC) we were shocked that there was no ferry between islands.  It seems crazy with close a couple of islands are to one another.  When we asked about it we appeared to be opening a big can of worms.

Last night was another 2 x 20 at 270.  I was gonna wuss out at 250, and planned on it, but my finger kept pressing the + button to 270, so I guess I was doing it.  At the end of number 2 I was hurting big time.  It's strange though, those sessions don't make my legs hurt after, but I am just worn the F out from the effort....

Tonight 4K swim and 4 ish mile run.

Finalizing all the crap at work that happens pre vacation.  Have one ride planned but that will be it for two weeks.  Will run and swim as much as I can....

Awesome area!  I am hoping they get a HIM up there.  I am probably 2-2.5 hours south.  We have a cottage somewhat near there in East Jordan on Lake Charlevoix so am usually up there a couple times a year.  I wish I had those hills down here.

Welcome Arend.

Us Canucks are getting close to a majority here :-) We needed Maritime representation. I split my time between Montreal and Ottawa

I registered to volunteer at IMMT, so hopefully we will cross paths.

So what now, do I now need to get duel citizenship?

Hey everyone, Fred invited me to join the group.  130 pages, looks like an active group!

Name: Arend teRaa (just pronounced like Aaron with a hint of a D at the end)

Story: I was a swimmer as a kid, up to my first two years of University.  Didn't do anything else from a sports point of view, no biking, no running.  After I stopped swimming I pretty much went cold turkey on activity and didn't get back in a pool for about 12 years.  Then one day I saw that two of my old swimming buddies had done a local triathlon and my first thought was "I could do that!".  I bought a bike (hybrid), tried to run and then found BT.  It took me almost two years before I did a race, I fought my knees running for most of it until my physio straightened me out.  Been hooked ever since!

2011 Races: 3 Duathlons, 3 sprints, 1 Oly and 1 with odd distances but along the lines of an Olympic or a bit longer.  I was supposed to do a HIM as well but it was cancelled 2 weeks before it.

2012 Races: I've done one sprint, one double duathlon and my main focus is IM Mont Tremblant which will be my first IM.  I also entered a race on July 1st that was going to be a long training day to test nutrition etc.  It was an IM distance swim, IM distance bike and then a 21.1k run.  Unfortunately I picked up a gastro bug and woke up that morning with some nasty cramps.  I started the race, swam 56:26 but as soon as I started the bike I couldn't take on any water or food without the cramps.  I gutted it out for 40k on the bike hoping it would improve before I bailed and turned around.

Family: It's my wife and I and our 3 dogs.  My wife is super supportive, she comes to all of my races and completely supports me in the long training hours.  She also trains a lot for duathlons, at least up until she crashed on her bike in early May.  That has put her out of commission with a separated shoulder and subsequent surgery.  She was training for the bike leg of an IM relay but that has been deferred to next year.

IM training has been very interesting for me.  I've really enjoyed it for the most part but I'm not sure it is going to be a distance I race often.  The run is going to be a huge question mark for me.  My left knee is constantly on the edge of flaring up on me and that has limited me somewhat in training.  My longest run has only been 26 kms (Gulp!).

My plan for next year is to do some HIMs to see how I like that (I know, backwards....).

Happy to join the group!

Welcome Aboard Arend!

Glad to have your swimming expertise in the group.  One of my goals is a sub 1hr IM swim and still survive the day.

One thing I am considering is dropping my front end just a bit.  I've got some spacers to play with, and wondering if I can improve my aerodynamics while not messing with my power.  If I take out a spacer do I need to really make any other adjustments - ie. move the saddle forward a bit?

Neil,

A few mm in adjustment is huge in bike fit.  Yes that could cause body angles to be thrown off.  The best thing is; do this at a LBS that way they can check the hip and knee angles.  OR  Make an appointment a the LBS to get checked, change the spacer and then get rechecked.

Took a rest day yesterday, and my legs feel very refreshed.  Going to hammer out some hills this afternoon.

I've got a relay tri on Sunday.  Doing the bike portion of course...looking to post a top 3 bike split overall...only conceeding to pro Tim Marr, and maybe one other local stud.  I chose our team name..."Dream Crushers"...we should be the favorite to win the mixed team relay, and hopefully the overall relay.

axteraa - 2012-07-26 3:52 AM I can tape my cover to the Mavic Open Pro wheel I use.  I also use the screws just to make sure it will stay but the tape is definitely an option.

I would highly advise using at least 4 of the screws just in case.  I saw a guy who just used tape during a TT and the cover came off the rim.  He had to rip it off completely just so he could ride back to the start since he didn't have a chain tool.

I've used tape only before, but after seeing that, I figure 4 screws isn't going to kill me.

I suppose once the tape starts to peel back, the wind will get in there and quickly start peeling the rest of it back.  If you have a couple screws in, it should at least hold the cover down.

So I signed up for SavageMan half this AM.  This will be my 3rd SM.  1st year I did well 2nd year I did the race with Fred.  He did well and a podium.

It has a very challenging bike portion.  If you’re near Western Maryland, Deep Creek area check it out.

You're going to love it.  Hoping for good clear weather!  When you get near the top, take a moment to enjoy just how quiet it is up there.  They say that in the actual crater (not on the road), it has been measured as the quietest place on earth.
