Sunny
Total Time = 3h 50m 24s
Overall Rank = 437/445
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 5/7
Pre-race routine:

Had everything packed and loaded the night before except my camelback in the fridge and 2 extra bottles of gatorade in the freezer. REMEMBERED THEM THIS TIME!!! Had my bagel as I drove.

Parking was a long way away, which kind of sucked.
Swim
  • 39m 25s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

First wave was the Athena/Clydesdale/50+/Relay people. I liked this as it meant that no matter how long it took I wasn't alone on the course, and frankly it was nice to get started.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice more - I'm still too slow.
Transition 1
  • 06m 17s
Comments:

SLOW but better - the biggest issue is that we ran through sand and I couldn't get it all off my feet to put my socks on. That took far longer than it should have.
What would you do differently?:

Putting on shorts over a wet bathing suit was kind of a pain. Back to tri shorts that I can swim in.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 35s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.22 mile/hr
Comments:

Still struggling on hills, but my cornering has improved a lot and the camelback worked well for hydration.
What would you do differently?:

Practice hills
Transition 2
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

I still had sand on my feet so I took my socks off and shook everything off again.
What would you do differently?:

bring a 2nd pair of socks - then I don't have to get them back ON again before the run.
Run
  • 1h 35m 6s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 15m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Ugh - ran out of gas. The course was supposed to have water and gatorade but had just water, so I was carefully consuming my clif shot blocks to make them last the whole distance. But I walked a lot more than I ran.

It was also getting hot and direct sunlight by the time I got to the run. While I can't say for sure it was an issue, I'd be amazed if it weren't.

Major issues:
- My calves and hamstrings kept trying to tighten up, so I would walk for a couple of minutes.
- Something is in bloom, because breathing wasn't quite right - I kept getting little side-stitches from not enough air when I ran. I would walk until it cleared and then go again.
- The bathing suit with the underwire is being retired - I need to get a speedo and just suck it up and wear a sports bra under it. The underwire was digging.

The GOOD news is that I had only minimal negative self-talk and stopped it as soon as it started. MAJOR improvement.
What would you do differently?:

RUN the run. But I say that every time. More practice will help.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, had some more water and part of a bagel, then Janel gave me a quick stretch and rubdown. I'll be getting a full massage tomorrow from her.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

50 extra lbs are still a problem. I really need to lose that and to work on my running - not just speed but also the ability to do it for long stretches.

Event comments:

My main issue was with parking - it was 1/4 to 1/2 mile away. Who needs that after a race...

What does it say about me that despite the fact that I was probably the last of the BTers out there to finish, I posted my report first... Undecided

I'd say that you were excited to write about your race report, and so you should be! You did a great job out there... and congrats on the minimal negative self-talk. The mental battle is just as important as the physical battle.. and you did a fantastic job on both accounts.

I think you're wrong. I think that there's quite a bit more good news here than you are letting yourself see. Yes, the mental game is a huge part of the battle, and major improvements there are going to pay off all over. But look at you! You're racing! And you're doing pretty dang good, too! That's a perfectly decent placement and time, and avg 17mph on the bike is not bad at all.

Well...I think you did great at the Oly!  Sounds like you had a solid race, and you picked up on stuff to do next time.  The speed stuff will come later.  At least that's what I'm hoping too (I know what you mean about the run).

Yeah, I was suprised they didn't have Gatorade out there...just water.  Saw quite a few people hooked up to IVs after the race!

Positive self talk, girl. That's the only thing that is missing from the RR and comments below. I think you are outstanding for continuing to challenge yourself. You coulda quit, instead of slowed down. You coulda raced with all the "skinny girls" and really felt slow. But, you kick it like anyone else in the race. I think you are fabulous. The fact that you were the first RR means absolutely nothing other than deep inside, there is one proud girl who has made it for herself. Let the inner light shine

Awesome race Rebecca!!!  I'm so happy and proud for you!  I think you did so well... and overcoming the self-talk alone was outstanding.  Good good job girl.
