"I would be careful comparing published crime statistics from Mexico with domestic crime statistics. If there's a question of police corruption, then the crime stats are also suspect."

Absolutely agreed. And as a former worker in the intelligence gathering industry (A U.S. Army Long Range Surveillance Unit, Co. "F", 425 LRS (AIRBORNE)) and in service to other intelligence industry assets I know not to trust local intel sources. That is why I included official U.S. State Department and U.S. Embassy links in my posting on the topic. Please take a glance back at the post I wrote in this thread to review those resources as they are current and actionable.

Additonally, there are private security and intelligence gathering assets. One of the best, and one I use and recommend is:

Additionally, statistics- regardless of their credibility, source and trustworthiness only paint a broad picture, a statistical representation. That is why I wanted to relate my personal experience (given, a one-time circumstance) going into town on a busy weekend night with U.S. license plates in a fancy vehicle loaded with luggage.

No problems.

I think a portion of what we're dealing with when people discuss travel to Mexico is a somewhat common reaction of U.S. citizens and their response to media about drug violence in Juarez (430 miles away) and other locales with documented drug violence. Those locales are dangerous and State Department warnings about travel to those regions are current and published.

The empiracle crime statistics, U.S. government advisories and other resources indicate that Puerto Penasco is safe for tourist travel, with a lower incidence of crime as reported by U.S. authorities (not Mexican sources) than Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C. and several other major U.S. cities.

Here are the resources for your review:

From wikipedia:

"It was noted recently in an article about crime in the USA that you are 17 times more likely to have violent crime affect you in Flint, Michigan than in Rocky Point."

From a USA Today report by staff writer Laura Bly, updated 2/9/2012:

"It notes that 'millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year for study, tourism, and business ... there is no evidence that Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) have targeted U.S. visitors and residents based on their nationality. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major trafficking routes.'"

Official U.S. State Department Travel Advisory page for Mexico (entire country) updated 2/8/12:

(Note that there is no mention, warnings or comments about Rocky Point or Puerto Penasco)

Here is the security update from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico with detailed, up to date, unbiased government reporting of crime and potential risk to U.S. citizens in Mexico:

There is no mention of risk in Puerto Penasco.
