Subject: 650c tires

I have a p3 with zipp 404 605c's.  The tires are rated for about 170 psi.   As I am looking for tires, I am finding them, but with a rating for about 120 psig.  A friend told me that I should be using the current ones about 120-130 psig. (I am 165 pounds)

My question is am I operating at the right pressure?  When I buy replacement/spares, should I be looking to replace in kind?  Will I lose alot of performance if I don't get the higher rated tire?  What other attributes should I be looking for?

Any help is appreciated.  Sorry for all the questions.

Best answer to your question is maybe.  Tire pressure is relative to the tire size as well as the weight it supports for the proper amount of deflection which relates to the rolling resistance and traction.  There is no one size fits all.

All you'll ever want/need to know about tires and tubes.

Dunno if 650C vs 700c has anything to do with this but I have 650C so my 2 cents worth:  I run a Conti G tri on front, Gatorskin on the back with my training wheels.  Both are rated 120 psi.  On my racing wheels I have a set of Conti Sprinters that go up to 170 psi.  Honestly, I can't tell the difference and I weigh ~ 195.
