Swim
Comments: Started okay, a little cold, but started to warm up once I got moving. Sighting was atrocious, I ended up running head on into a lifeguard on a paddle board (still have the bump on my head today, Tuesday). Garmin shows that I zigzagged a lot, and I felt it. Everytime I looked up to sight I was off course in one direction or another. Once out of the main harbor area there was quite a bit of swell and so sighting had to be timed just right to hit the top of the swell. What would you do differently?: 1. Swim straighter 2. Not run in to lifeguard 3. Remember to breathe to both sides (did this mostly but for some reason kept wanting to breathe to the right, ended up with a lot of chafing on that side despite the use of body glide. Transition 1
Comments: Casual transition, drank some G2, put on long sleeve cycling jersey, drank more G2. What would you do differently?: Move faster, cut the chit chat Bike
Comments: First 20 or so miles were okay, Garmin was not working as planned, calculating way more miles than actually travelled. Ended up walking up most of all three "hills" on the course. Had about 3 bottles of perform, a half pack of sport beans, 6 shot bloks, and half a blueberry oat bonk breaker bar. Felt very out of energy as well as cold on the bike. Ended up hitting T2 3 minutes before the bike cutoff, before the race I was anticipating having about an hour on the bike cutoff. Made 3 potty stops. What would you do differently?: 1. Ride up the hills rather than walk 2. Ride up the hills rather than walk 3. Ride up the hills rather than walk 4. Make the time cutoff by more than 3 minutes. Transition 2
Comments: Okay, so I'm not a fast transitioner. Had to hit the potty, and had left my bottle at my transition spot, so had to go back and get it before heading out. What would you do differently?: Move faster. Run
Comments: I knew once I hit transition that it would be impossible for me to finish before the 4:18 cutoff as my best 10K times are in the 1:40 range and I only had about 2.5 hours to finish. I made the best of it walking the first mile, then run/walking the rest to try to keep heart rate down. I hit the cutoff point about 10 or so minutes after the cutoff time, so my day was done. What would you do differently?: 1. Finish before the cutoff 2. Finish before the cutoff 3. Finish before the cutoff Post race
Warm down: Walked around, but due to not finishing was pretty well warmed down by the time I headed back to T2. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of hill training on the bike, due to focus on the run. Last updated: 2011-10-24 12:00 AM

Parked at T2, dropped additional stuff off at T2 then headed to T1/swim start. Was difficult trying to ride with those darn plastic gear bags, ended up getting one caught in front wheel and flipping over with bike. Got up, checked bike, brake seemed to be rubbing so ended up walking the rest of the way to the start. Got to start, had bike techs check out bike, front wheel slightly out of true, but would work for the race, they adjusted so the brake wouldn't rub. Set up my T1 and made a few potty stops, checked in with others I knew that were racing. Then headed to line up for the start.
Got feet wet on the ramp, swam to start line, warmed up suit while waiting for the start, most were surprised by the start as there was no countdown.
