Subject: 2 weeks to go and I got the crud
I have my first 50 miler in 2 weeks and have been battling the crud on and off for a couple months - allergies and sinus issues are terrible this year!  Up to now I have stopped it each time it tried to enter my chest.  I have a super sore red throat and kills me when I cough and that nasty yellow/green infection stuff does come up and its a deep cough.  Although the cough sounds deep and the crud comes up I dont feel weezy when I breath?  I am going to the DR today as soon as he can fit me in and getting a shot to see if it will jump start the oral antibiotics.  I also worry the antibiotics may not work or may bring my immune system lower since I am sure with all this running it probably isnt functioning properly anyways. This weekends run schedule is 16-20 tomorrow and 10 on Sunday.  What would you recommend I do? Switch the runs around and take it shorter tomorrow in hopes of feeling better? Rest completely tomorrow and just run long on Sunday? I'm already a anxious wreck about the 50, have I dont enough, how bad is it gonna hurt, how long will it take, will I get back to the hotel ok? Im gonna be all alone out there too not knowing anyone which hasnt bothered me up until now and maybe thats due to not feeling too well. Thanks for any advice and positive vibes

Oh Jenn all I can do is offer a big warm healing {{MELON PRESS}} and prayers for strength and healing. I'll let the wise ultrafolks (I got lost on a marathon and ran an extra 10K; does that count? ) answer the tough stuff ... but I will say at this point, the hay is probably in the barn and extra rest/putting energy into healing your body instead of wearing it down with more running might be a good idea.

Just returned from Urgent care, had called my Dr at 8:30 when he opened this morning to see if he could get me in for a shot and they are only opened till 11:30, finally at 11:25 I called back and they said oh sorry we cant get you in, can you come in monday, DUH! So I went to Urgent Care. The Nurse Practitioner on duty was a friend who I use to train for Ironman with her husband so atleast she understands endurance athletes too! Told her my 50 miler was 2 weeks out, she did a swab for whooping cough since it's going around and that will take a couple days to come back and also did a flu swab for any virus and that should return this afternoon from their and then they will send it off as well.  Got a shot in the hip of antibiotic, got a zpac, got prednisone, fluticasone nasal spray and mucinex...now thats what I call getting your moneys worth! Think I will just chill out today and take tomorrow off

Don't sweat it. Skip it. Do it. Either way, spend the next week running 10-20 km runs and the week after running 5-10k runs. This weekend really is not going to make a difference, although I know it feels like it will, it just won't. There is nothing there.

Get better, get healed up. Crush it.

I hope you start to feel better quickly.  I agree with Yanti - most of your hard work is done.  My sis didn't run for more than a week before her 50 miler due to a foot issue and a cold.  She was fine on race day.

Sending good vibes!!!

Totally agree with the above.  I think that you will be better off skipping the runs especially if that will help you feel better for the race.  Hope the crud clears up for you.

My body is feeling better however the congestion in the chest makes me sound like im 90 years old and have been smoking for 70 of them.  I had to get out there and do a little today and went to the forest where there is some nice climbs which I will sometimes walk many of them thinking at least Im out walking and on my feet - I did walk pretty much every uphill then just took a nice slow job downhill and on the flats keeping the heart rate down so that I didnt cause myself some sort of coughing fit.  Had just a few of them and they didnt get out of control.  My nose is still feeling a little strange but finished the zpak this morning and have 3 more days on the prednisone.

I would hold off on the musinex.  I had a bad experience with that stuff. It does help you cough up the crud but also makes you produce more mucus so it's an infinite loop.  I just used an antihistamine with a decongenstent to dry me out and that helped me this past fall with this sort of thing.  My daughter had pnumonia and I think i caught it from her.  That was 3 weeks before my first half marathon. I had a week of relative health before the half and I was fine until I crossed the finishline and almost passed out from coughing.  It was weird while running I was fine and could have done the full marathon but as soon as I stopped running the coughing came back in a big way.

Hoping for the best for you and love your avi.
