Subject: Super Saturday
well, I just can't wait to do my RR. I used a borrowed watch, so I'll have to wait for the results to be posted to get my accurate times.

The fun began last night when my friend Donna arrived. I was so antsy and going nutz so we went to the beach to get my stuff thinking we'd be home before Max arrived. Wrong! (sorry Max!) There was a good size crowd at the beach and it took longer than anticipated and Max caught up to us there. Then it was back to my house for dinner, a Red Sox game and an early bed time.

I was up at 4:45 and out the door at 5:30. Max and I rode to the race while my husband and Donna drove the car with out stuff in it. We had plenty of time to kill for the 7AM race that never starts until 7:30. I found some old friends, stood in line for the bathroom a few times, and chatted with the announcer who had been my boss about 10 years ago.

There were 11 waves and I was in # 8 so I had plenty of time. Most of the people were lined up on the beach when Max and I finally made our way over. There was no point in rushing so we didn't. We went in the water to check it out, nice! Official temp was 64, felt fine. I went back to where my wave was standing and in a few minutes a man came up and asked if I was Ellen. It was Glen (c2fd) who also lives nearby. We chatted until it was time for us to be off, and then we were!

The swim was remarkably easy! My wetsuit felt great and I just poured it on. I never stopped, and even managed to pass a few people in the water. Out of the water, I even managed to run thru the sand while removing the wetsuit at the same time. Passed a few more people and headed over to my bike. Transition was fine, nothing out of the ordinary. Wetsuit came off fine, bike shoes and helmet on, and off we go.

The bike ride was great, I played cat and mouse with a women and a few guys for the 10 mile ride. it was great because we pushed each other the entire time. The next transition also went well as I put on socks and running shoes. Now my run sucks big time, and I gave up all the gains from the swim and bike big time. People were passing me the entire time and I was telling myself just to be happy that I was out there running and not home on the couch. Think of this as just another training run, with 900 of my closest friends! My knee was killing me, but I never stopped, managed to run the entire 3.5 miles.

My total time was 1:30, which was only 2 minutes slower than when I did this race 2 years ago. I was shocked, thinking I'd be somewhere over 1:40. Man, if I could just get a decent run going, I could beat all of my times from a few years ago. Anyhow, I ended up taking 2nd place in my Athena division and my friend Cheryl took first. All is right with the world, that's how it's been since we met on a bike rack in 2000

Max left about a half hour ago and has a 2 hour ride home. I am not going to tell ANY of his story, we'll all just have to wait for that. And the pictures he has on his camera. And that's about all there is. The splits will probably be up later tonight, and I could kill for a nap right about now but my son wants a ride to his friend's house. They both volunteered this morning, so they can have damn near anything they want right now! And that's all folks!

Super job. Maybe its just me but I would take a sore knee and a slow run time over homework anyday. Keep up the great work.

OK, here goes the story from my end.  I was in the final wave of the day (the Geritol group).  We are off.  I figure I want to try to get to the front to avoid the Mixmaster blender of arms and legs in the water, so I blast out as if fired from a gun.  At the first bouy I am out in front of the entire group.  But I've gone anaerobic and have to slow down.  A couple swimmers catch me and I'm in the blender!  I roll over and swim backstroke, which was my event on the high school swim team (40 years ago!) and I continue this for the remainder of the swim (probably 75% of the 1/4 mile distance).  I can keep pace with everyone doing backstroke, but occasionally get a bit off course since there are no ceiling markers to follow!  Finally the end, I'm a bit woozy getting out of the water, but I struggle up the beach, having a bit of trouble unzipping the wetsuit, until I find that I haven't un-done the velcro, then it comes off to my waist.  It takes another minute to remove the rest, I get on the bike and start my usual hammering.  10 miles, on the aero bars and I start passing people.  There are about 850 in front of me because of the wave start, and in the next 10 miles I pass over 100 of them at least.  No one goes by me...WOO HOO!  Finish the bike, pretty tired, but averaging 22 mph for the 10 miles.  Start running.  For once my legs don't feel like lead, instead I settle into a steady 8:20 per mile pace.  Half way through the run I pass "Team Ellen".  I had been looking for her all the way through the bike ride and thought I went by her and missed seeing her.  But no here she is, a testament to how good a bike ride she had!  Way to go Ellen!  I hit the water station and grab a cup.  Oh joy!  My mouth has been feeling like the Russian Army marched through it wearing wool socks, I am so dehydrated!  I chug a cup and plod on, holding a steady pace to the finish.  Wow, my first TRUE triathlon is in the bag...all the races to this point have been Duathlons.  We hang around for the festivities...I get 2nd place in the 50-59 age group for first timers with a time of around 1:15 which was just about what I'd hoped for.  I need to cut down my transitions a bit to save perhaps 2 minutes, maybe pick up 2 more minutes on the run, and 1 more on the swim so that I can get my Fall Hyannis Triathlon time on the same course down to around 1:10, plenty of work to do over the summer.  Pictures to come tonite after I get them out of the camera and loaded to my album.

Thanks to Ellen, Mike and family for putting me up overnight.  Today I'm off to Connecticut to visit Evelyn and run in the 7 mile Litchfield Hills road race.

Max

imagine my surprise when Max caught me on the run! When I didn't see him on the bike I figured he passed me in the water, he's that fast!

Sheesh, such humility Ellen.  I didn't pass ya till near the end cuz you was SMOKIN' up the course!  Pass you in the water?  You would have had to swim to the Vineyard for that to happen!

I'm sending in my registration for the Hyannis II race, I enjoyed the first one so much!
