Pre-race routine:

woke up (did I ever go to sleep?) and ate a bagel with honey, some gaterade, and some coffee. took some Aleve for the foot and headed out the door around 6:00. RAIN WAS POURING DOWN!!! thankfully, by the time I arrived at the race site, the rain had stopped.
Event warmup:

dropped the bike off in the TA and parked the car. got my chip and did the body marking thing. introduced myself to BT'er BeCivil. ran about a mile, biked about 2 miles, and swam 200 meters or so. H20 temp was 69!!! bargained with Elite John from our tri club about our swim times. He started right behind me!
Swim
  • 07m 13s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

typical pool swim. John passed me around the 250 mark. I passed a couple of racers. basically took it ez throughout. seems like there is always a point in the swim where I wonder, WTF am I doing? this didn't happen this time...maybe I finally got this tri swimming pace down.. anyway, I jumped out the pool and ran to T1. time includes the run.
What would you do differently?:

not let John pass me!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

don't know how long this took, but I sucked! and the transitions were one of the areas I wanted to focus on and improve. seems like I just lost my focus and did everything in slow mo. I MUST improve here; this is EZ time!

on the funny side, I fell down putting on my left bike shoe!! LOL!!
What would you do differently?:

focus, focus, focus. I need to start thinking about T1 during the swim!
Bike
  • 40m 5s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.96 mile/hr
Comments:

passed some racers around mile 2, then the course openned up. didn't see anyone until mile 8 where I passed 2 more. took it ez on the last mile or so. the plan was to pull the feet out and ride on top of the bike shoes before T2.... well, I decided not to do this because the dang traffic cop let a car go just as I was about to turn, so I had to slam on the brakes and wait to cross the road into the parking lot at T2. only lost 10 seconds or so, but it screwed up my feet-out-of-shoes practice. bike time must include T1 and T2 times...
What would you do differently?:

prepare for T2 more.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

again, I lost focus here. I couldn't tie my running shoes. I guess I need to get some of those Yankz laces... another slow mo transition.
What would you do differently?:

maybe I need more sleep!
Run
  • 26m 54s
  • 3.6 miles
  • 07m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

OK, I wanted to have a good run and I did! I'm glad there was a long downhill at the beginning so I could get my pace going. I love the trail part of this run! It was muddy as hell on the second part. you had to keep jumping from side to side because the middle of the trail was pure mud. almost fell a couple of times! the toughest part was the uphill at the end, but I managed to keep going. PF - 85%
What would you do differently?:

gotta continue to work on the running strength. keep my PF rehab up and get healthy!
Post race
Warm down:

talked to some fellow tri club members, grabbed some gatorade and chocolate chip cookies. ran into BeCivil again and we chatted about the race. Great race BeCivil! waited for 2 more hours until the awards ceremony. I got 1st place in the Masters division and 4th overall. very pleased.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

need to push that run faster!

Event comments:

this race was a bit unorganized. this was the first year for a new race director. they will get it right next year.

What, you are moving at the speed of light these days, man. Look at your anking. Wow.  It's amazing to read a RR whe the biggest beefs are your t times and the stooopid cop who let a car through. Didn't he see you were traveling like a comet? Great job. Fabulous. Next time, try to get some sleep!!

Wow, great race! Man that's friggin cold for a pool swim! Sounds like you have figured out to just race and have fun and not let your mind get in the way. Way to bring home the hardware.

Gratz on your race Mark.  You've gotten sooooper fast in the last couple of months.  You rock!  Maybe you were moving so damn fast they cop didn't see you...lol.  Actually, isn't this the race where you have that ***** of a climb right at the end of the bike?

Sorry that I missed this one.  That won't happen again.

Boy I'll say you had a good run...I dunno how you run so fast after coming off the bike.  I go through the aid stations in slow motion and you're one of those smokin' fast dudes that disappears into the distance.  Great race!!
