Just curious- what does everyone do so they can afford to do the thing that you really want to do? Are people in your "normal" life surprised about your hobby?

I am a hairdresser. Most of my clients don't even know what a triathlon is. All my coworkers think I am pretty much insane for doing any of this. My job doesn't usual = active people. We just like to look pretty and make other people look pretty. Most of the time I try to combine the 2 and try to look pretty while running/swimming/cycling. Unfortunately, that doesn't always come across in race photos!

I am a product marketing guy for CPA2Biz.  If you know what CPA2Biz is, then you are likely good with numbers.  :-)

I am also an artist -- one of my paintings is currently used as my avatar here on BT.

Watcha gonna do, watcha gonna do when they come for you? bad boys bad boys...... lol love that show and thats what I do for a living, I am a police officer. I got into triathlon to lose weight and be in better health because its important for the job as well as my overall well being. I have a few people I work with who do/have done triathlon but alot just do running races. Either way, its still fun to do events with my buddies from work. I wouldnt say that my job helps me "afford" my triathlon lifestyle (I could stand to make more than I do) but it pays the bills and a good part of my tri addiction. I only talk to a few guys about triathlon at work and those are the guys that are active in races. I dont discuss my tri hobby amongst the bad guys though, I doubt that they would care

Engineer / Cube Farm Dweller

Go into Tri's after starting swimming to lose weight/keep from getting fatter.  Once I could run again (chronic PF until lost some weight) the crack-high hit, and I was hooked.

I'm a firefighter.  My rank is FEO (Fire Equipment Operator) which means I drive an Engine.  Not bad work.  Doesn't pay for the addiction completely but they like it when you work out on duty.  Like almost every other firefighter I have a side job.  I also teach at the Florida State Fire College.  I teach firefighting and Apparatus Operations (how to drive and operate a fire engine) the most, but I'll help out with others when need be.

I actually don't have a DAY job, but I do have a NIGHT job. I work the overnight shift as a paramedic (I know, not very exciting). After bills and such I have enough left over to pay for part of my tri addiction. The other part I get through savings.

A few nurses I know are into tri and a few do running. We talk a bit but none of them will come train with me. Something about how the 'emergency' mode never seems to turn off in my head making me always on the move.

I am a children's librarian--I read picture books and sing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" to support my tri habit.  It's not enough, but I have a good family--one sister gave me her bike on "long-term loan", another sister gave me a trainer and a polyester swimsuit, etc.  None of my co-workers know I'm training or tri-ing.  The next youngest person there is nearly 20 years older than me and while they are lovely co-workers, they are not friends.  I'll have to fess up to the boss when I ask for time off for IMFL in November, but almost certainly not before.

I teach 9th grade English. Never a dull day at the office. My students know that I race and they pretend to think it's cool. I have old race numbers lining the whiteboard. Often on Monday mornings, I show up with numbers on my legs and arms. And, of course, on those days I wear short sleeves and a skirt. Wink

I'm active duty Air Force. I used to be an aircraft mechanic, but then Uncle Sam decided that I needed to work in the medical field. I now am an MRI tech. I also do X-rays and on occasion, other diagnostic imaging procedures.

In years past, I have had part time jobs since being in the military really doesn't pay all that much (you can look it up online - it's public information). I have tested space suits for NASA, worked as a lifeguard, and worked at a snow-cone stand (my kids thought that was the most awesome job).

Freelance software engineer.  I get to work from home, which gives me a pretty flexible schedule for training.  Since I don't see people during the work day, triathlons are a good way to see people face to face.

I work in sales and marketing support for a large hotel company. I set prices, deal with the technical part of pricing and provide data and rate analysis to sales people.

That makes it sounds very grand. I sit in front of a computer in cube-land and work entirely over the phone.

We have a pretty interesting and diverse group of people here.

Accounting and operations for a small marketing and sales consulting firm (which basically means I'm the right hand person to the CFO/COO).

My tri bike and a lot of race expenses were paid for by a couple wins on Jeopardy! back in 2008, however...

House-fiance here. I am not married yet, so I can't "technically" call myself a housewife. Wink Hey, it's hard work!  This gives me a huge flexibility in training.

Just graduated with BS in Game Art and Design. Specialty is Texture and Environmental Artists.  I make the stuff in video games look good.

I'm the ONLY person in my class (my major, not of all college students) of 30+ students that does something outside of school in regards of exercising...I guess that sucks to be the oldest too.   They prefer to play video games. How little do they know what real life is about and what they're going to look like 10-15 years from now.   They think *I* am nuts for NOT playing video games as much as they do. Perplexing ain't it?

Lot's of school people here! I'm a School Psychologist. I spend like 95% of my time working with kids that have (or are suspected of having) learning disabilities and other disabilities that make school hard. I give lots of IQ and academic tests, mixed with a little therapy, and I also spend a lot of time doing state/federally required paperwork (IEPs), so the interwebs is a nice way to break up that report and paperwork stuff on the computer,

That's just what I get paid to do, though. I am into Fiats, John Deere's, Chainsaws, and other random antiques. I also am married with a beautiful wife and two squirrely kids.

And apparently now I am a budding triathlete!

Occupation = desk jockey.

I'm a freight broker.  Basically I help get the things people need from point A to point B.  Lots of time on the phone and plenty of time in front of a the computer screen.  Lucky for me I work from home.  A commute of 20 feet is nice.
