Subject: Epic swimming fail in the making?
I'm going to repost this because it's hidden within another thread that isn't seeing traffic. Please help me either get a dose of reality, or ease my fears, or both or neither, whatever...

I'm bumping this to the top because I just had a swim session (my third ever, to clarify) and it was full of suck. I didn't swim the entire thing straight through, but I'm definitely making some progress.

Here's my concern. If u look at those results posted above you'll see the times around ten minutes for the "long" tri. I'm disregarding that one guy in the first long spot. But that is supposed to be a half mile swim. Do those times sound right? Maybe I'm not right on the pool length. I've heard it's a 25 yard pool. Then I heard it's 36 laps to a mile, but it can't be both.

Anyway, 18 laps were done for me in about 25 minutes with some rest mixed in there. I honestly think I could knock 5 minutes off of that if I didn't rest and pushed a little more. My time would still be double of those posted on that spreadsheet. As it stands with rest and all I think it worked out to 2:42per 100yards.

Is my swim THAT full of suck? I know I'm not gonna be a good swimmer until I put the time in, but this feels to me like I just found out I'm signed up for a 5k and everybody runs 6min pace while I am at about a 12min pace.

Someone please tell me that those results seem off and that the long course was probably just 100 yards longer than the short last year.

I'm not "TRAINING," I'm just having some FUN doing some THINGS that might lead to a COMPETITION.

If it's a 25 yard pool, 18 laps would be, indeed, just a hair over 1/2 mile.... 880 yards.

Those times are definitely way off, I believe. If the short course is 9 laps (450 yards), then most of those times are kinda believable, but several are still absolutely FLYING at world record paces.... like, the person with the 4:14 time: that's 28.2 seconds per 50. It ain't happening without a JetSki.

If the long course is the 18 laps, then only the 10 minute time is believable to me as the others would be having to average under 1:00 per 100. Those folks would need to be on a plane to London this summer.

I would bet that 4:14 is from a kid who did shorter distances since the bike and run times are very short also. Plus it was a 350 yard swim and plenty of people can do that time for that distance.

How long was the course supposed to be?  To me, and I could be way off, but it looks like you're counting each time down the lane as 1 lap, instead of down and back.  18 laps would be 36 lengths, which would be 1/2 mile.  And 1 mile, or 36 laps equals 72 lengths.  The "record times," if you double the perceived length, would be about right.

The short course is 350yards. I THOUGHT the long course was half mile, because that's what I found elsewhere online and what they told me it would be this year.

That michael girard guy won in 2009 (same short distance) with a time of 1:09 or something around there. His swim time was 4:40 for the 350, His 5k time was 22ish then, he has much improved if these new times are to be believed, but I guess he really was FOP by A LOT!

I'm counting a lap as down and back. If my 18 laps was 18 lengths in 25 minutes, then I think I'd just give up swimming, lol.

The short course should have been 350yards, 14 miles, 3.1 miles (sbr), the long course should have been 1/2 mile, 18 miles, 6.2 miles.

Here's the race brochure:

I figured you knew that, but when I read the "that's 28.2 seconds per 50," and "the others would be having to average under 1:00 per 100," if you double the times, it'd be about right.  Was just my idea lol
