Subject: Early Lake Swim this weekend or next anyone?

Anyone crazy enough to join this newbie for a lake swim either this coming weekend or next?

I'm hoping to rent my first wetsuit & test it out before buying (I found one I like this past weekend). Doesn't *have* to be immediate, but the store only has 1 suit left in my size & I'd like to grab it before the season picks up & it disappears. Don't want to spring the cash without a test "run" though.

I'm right in downtown MPLS, but could travel if needed. Just don't want to go alone, and don't have any friends who swim. Haven't done an open water workout ever before.

I'm free this Sunday or the following Saturday.

I'm out of town this weekend (Photographing a ghost town Woooooooo).  I might be in for next weekend though!  I also have a buddy that might like to join.

Hoo boy, that is early!  Do you have any idea what the water temps might be?

The Minneapolis Parks don't post water temps until after Memorial Day weekend, so I have no idea.  A small/shallow lake would be your best bet. Maybe Cedar Lake?

I could go on Sunday afternoon, and might even so as far as putting on my wetsuit, but I can't guarantee getting into the water.   I am out of town next weekend.

See who can go/when and if it works out, I will come.  At least to call the paramedics when your heart stops

A ghost town?! That's awesome! April 21 works better for me than this weekend anyway. Keep me posted and I'll keep an eye on the weather. No idea of the lake temps yet. LOL But I have a laser digital thermometer thing that would at least tell us the surface temp and allow us to *estimate* how crazy we are! lol

Yup, crazy early. I wonder if I'm allowed to test a wetsuit in the YW pool...at least worth asking. LOL Kind of amazing that I'd feel more ridiculous doing that than getting in a lake in April.

I'm inclined to give it one more week (plus that would bring me to pay day) but I'll keep you posted. No idea what the water temps are (see my above post). Definitely nice to have someone to call 911 if needed! Oh man, I DON'T want to have to do that though.

Ooops, SoberTriGuy, I just saw that Sunday works better for you. I can make that work although I'm trying to get out to WI to train with my mom on the 22nd. Not like we're going to swim for hours anyway - perhaps we could make it later in the day so at least the air temp was warmer (in theory)?

I'll have to check my calendar, but I should have some time either day.  I'm going to see FoggyGoggles tomorrow too.  I'll see if he wants to join us.  I remember him posting about an open water swim weeks ago when there was still ice on the lakes....

No way this early for me, especially as air temps are going to be on the cold side too.  Maybe Memorial Day weekend!

Memorial Day weekend is perfectly fine in years when the "ice out" was much later. I think early May would be doable.

Well, I can't do the weekend of 21/22 but I will be dying to hear how it goes.  I will definitely be up for future group swims.  I love this time of year!

Nice! I'm in Adrian's mentor group & he suggested I post on here. I'm free anytime before 5pm on the 21st. Glad there is someone as crazy as me on here! LOL Even if you decide to stand on the shore & laugh at me. I'm not even that concerned with really swimming - just want to do enough strokes to know the suit fits really. Crossing my fingers for warmer air than today though!

Memorial day???  I'm most likely doing the Albert Lea Tri which is open water May 21st.

We'll see how soon I head out for an OWS. Probably quite yet. These cooler nights are not going to help the water temp.

You can try your wetsuit in the pool and rinse it good afterwards.

I'm in for Bryant Lake on the 21st.  I have plans that evening, but am open during the day.  Also, I'm pretty well insulated even without a wetsuit, I'm not too worried about the cold.

The water will be cold, but go for it. The buffalo tri group had an OWS a couple of weeks ago. Last year I was in the first weekend of may, and the ice was out much later. If itsmid 50's then it is cold. It doable

Actually, I can't come.  But will really look forward to the video, including all of the necessary squealing!  And Jerry, no excuses, you have to get into the water

Holy crap.  I can remember the Buffalo race in early JUNE sometimes when it was still cold.  Can't imagine it right now let alone a couple weeks ago.  That's just crazy talk  :-)
