Sunny
Total Time = 2h 00m 28s
Overall Rank = 374/720
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 63/103
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:30, had some coffee and a doughnut. Caught the shuttle to T1. Had a Clif bar about 45 minutes before the start. Stretched and made sure my tires had enough air.
Event warmup:

Thought I would jump in the water to swim a little before the start. OMG was it cold. I had a sleeveless wetsuit on and my arms felt like I put them in ice buckets. I was so shocked when I jumped in that it took a while for me to breathe normally again.
Swim
  • 10m 10s
  • 550 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started in the middle of the wave which I did not intend to do. I could never really get away from the group and the group seemed pretty tight. I was hitting people and being hit practically the whole time. I think the cold water got to me. My arms seemed to give out midway and then they just felt like lead. I never really got the breathing down. Did most of the swim with the head above water.
What would you do differently?:

Train in the open water
Transition 1
  • 05m 4s
Comments:

It was a very long way to T1 from the water. I was dizzy and my equilibrium was off. I never experienced that before. I chaulked it up to the cold water. I fell over when trying to get the wetsuit off cause I just couldn't keep my balance. I took my time getting my shoes and stuff on so I could get my bearings.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 11s
  • 16.8 miles
  • 15.71 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I did so much better than what the time said. I forgot my bike computer so I don't know if the mileage was right. The hills really slowed me down although I felt pretty good on them. I never felt I couldn't make it up them. I saw a few people walking thier bikes up some of the hills. This was also my first race with the new Felt bike - which I love! Such a comfortable ride.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Fine, everything went pretty smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 38m 48s
  • 4.3 miles
  • 09m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

After all the hills on the bike, I got out of the gate for the run and was faced with a pretty daunting hill. At least we got it over with in the beginning of the run. Other than that it was pretty nice. I was happy with my time. I big improvement from my times last year.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster
Post race
Warm down:

Had a banana and some Gatorade. Did some stretching then had a burger.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was my first tri of the season and was pretty cautious. I could have raced faster.

Event comments:

The volunteers were great!!!! So friendly. The only drag was how long it took to get my gear after the race was over. They had to cart our gear from T1 over to the finish area and by the time the gear arrived there was a line about 2 blocks long. My wetsuit fell out of my bag - it took a while to search for it. I finished the race at 11:20 and couldn't get out of there till 2. Other than that, the race was great!!!!

Just curious - were you in the first wave of 30-34s? Your swim (congestion) sounded pretty familiar! I think the hills are definitely the double-edged sword - they certainly suck, but it wouldn't be the same triathlon without them.  Good job on the improvement from last year! And congrats on the new bike too!

I was in the 3rd wave of 30-34. Yeah the hills were actually kind of a nice challange in a sick way.......

Thanks for posting a breakdown of the race. While I suspected it would be a bit too challenging for me, now I KNOW that I don't want to start the season with this one. Galena's pretty and all, but a) I don' t have a wetsuit and b) I hate cold water.
