Sunny
Total Time = 2h 11m 4s
Overall Rank = 38/511
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 8/70
Pre-race routine:

Stayed with friends at an awesome house a couple miles away. Up at 7, had a bagel with PB and honey and some coffee. Gel 20 minutes before the start.
Event warmup:

Did some jogging around the race site.
Swim
  • 21m 33s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a good swim. There were some fast guys in the wave so the start was at a good clip and with a good sized group. Sat on some feet for a long part of the swim and was with the same group most of the way around. The guys up front did a really good job navigating through the previous wave.
What would you do differently?:

Not much on this swim. PR for this distance.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Ugh. Well, everything was smooth til I started running with my bike, then I realized that the chain had somehow bounced off to the inside. Got up to the road and stopped to fix it (outside of T1 mat). And as I stopped my right shoe fell off. Not sure how that happened, either. Wrestled with the chain, gathered up my shoe and put it on and then got moving. Comedy of errors - not sure how the hell that happened.
What would you do differently?:

See above.

5th AG, 31OA
Bike
  • 1h 04m 3s
  • 23 miles
  • 21.55 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode pretty well. I went through a swarm up bees about a quarter mile into the ride. 6 or 8 of them bounced off of me, only one actually hung out and I was able to brush it off my arm before getting stung. That freaked me out! Got up to speed after the time spent on fumbling around on the side of the road and went to work. Both laps were right at 31:30. Second lap had to keep my head up and work my way through riders on their first lap.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Time is a tad deceiving cause I was on the side of the road for a minute or so at the start.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

This was pretty clean. First shoe took a second longer than normal just cause there was grass stuck on my feet that I didn't want on there.

6th AG. 47th OA.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Run
  • 43m 6s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Struggled a bit for the first mile or so. Then I got going a bit better. The first out and back was tough on loose gravel - handled it way better the second time through.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung around the race site. Chatted with some friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not bounce my chain when running through transition! Otherwise, I'm happy with a couple minute PR and had a lot of fun kicking off the season with this race!

Event comments:

New venue was nice. Run kept things interesting!

I just wanted to comment on the bees- I was in the first wave (I think you were as well?) and the bees got me good- 3 stings in my left quad. They were bouncing off my aero helmet like crazy! One of the strangest things that's happened to me in a tri!

I was in the wave after you, but we probably went through the bees within a minute of each other.
