Pre-race routine:

Ate cheeze/pbutter crackers 5:00 am.
Event warmup:

Very short jog, some shivering.
Swim
  • 51m 25s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very cold, 8 inch chop, leg cramps.
What would you do differently?:

Need more swim fitness, more frequent siting.
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

Took a bit to get sand off of feet, hit porta potty.
What would you do differently?:

Was alright.
Bike
  • 3h 35m
  • 56 miles
  • 15.63 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was just really hard, broke my front derailer cable around mile 40 or so which slowed me down. The bike was mostly cold with morning fog/cloud/mist that kept you cold if you went without a jacket, like I did. Feet were numb for the entire bike ride.
What would you do differently?:

New bike cable, need to be able to grind up really long climbs quickly, need to be able to go a little faster through deathly sharp corners.
Transition 2
  • 03m
Comments:

Was fine, hit the porta potty.
Run
  • 1h 44m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

My feet were still numb from the swim by the time I started the run. I hit it hard, kept pretty good focus and did well for my fitness level. This was a PR run by 6 minutes on a hilly course as compared to my previous HIM on a flat course. Happy with the run.
What would you do differently?:

Run was good. Just more fitness and speedwork/hill work. Was a PR run.
Post race
Warm down:

Took in some fluids and some calories.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall fitness.

Event comments:

The course was buitiful, the water was really cold, the bike was really hilly with long climbs, road conditions not good, technical sharp turning desents, very hilly run. This is a very challenging course. I hope they take feedback and improve the post race eats and put a portta potty on the bike.

decided I would check out your race report to get some ideas for my upcoming race. This course sounds like a brutal one. After all the hills on the bike your run time is amazing. Especially considering it was also an incredibly hchallenging course. Way to PR in the face of a challenging course!!
