Subject: Front mount water bottle without aerobars?
Hi.  I love my new road bike but it's so much harder to get the water bottle out of the cage than it was on my old bike.  I was thinking of a front mounted bottle, like I've seen attached to aerobars....but I don't have aerobars.  Thoughts?  Thanks.

Why is it harder?

I have seen bottle cages that attach to handle bars somehow but can you learn to use what you have or make some adjustment?

I potentially grab any place on the handlebars of my road bike. I can't think of anywhere I'd have the room to strap an entire bottle, not to mention that it wouldn't exactly be aero.

Blackburn makes a cage that loops over the bars and clamps onto the stem. Might be worth a look. And a stem-mounted cage (laying the cage on the stem extension) shouldn't be too difficult. I just don't like the extra weight up there.

I'm sorry to state the obvious, because you didn't say what kind of cages you havve, but if the cages are metal then they're "adjustable". Just bend it slightly to make the opening bigger.

Or you could just change them.

It's harder for two reasons.  1) The bike handling is different, so when I reach down for the bottle I wind up all over the place.  Practice will make this better, I know.  2) I think the cages are just tighter.  I'll see if I can open them up a bit.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.  It's probably best for me just to practice more with what I have.

The simplest solution just seems to be to get you some aerobars, lol.

There ya go, if the cages are metal just bend them out some and work on your bike handling. Don't look down when reaching for the bottle
