I should clarify.  The race is 1 hour from home.  The wedding is 5 hours from home.  I'm not sure what time the wedding will be either.  Could be 4 o'clock on Sat for all I know. The invitations haven't been sent yet.  I was just informed of the wedding plans by my cousin this past week end.  I didn't mention the race and am not yet registered.

The next 1/2 Ironman I could do would be the HITs series in Cooperstown NY which is about 1 1/2 hours from home on  Sept 22nd.  I would do that race except 2 weeks later I am running in my 1st marathon.

All I need to know. You are absolved of any guilt for missing this wedding.

I say it depends on how beautiful the bridesmaids are and if you can score with one of them. How close to you are to your cousin? Open bar? Good food? Dislike of your family? Really you could look at it as a 50/50 chance he has another wedding and if they check with you to make sure there is no IM competition near that time. Their poor planning doesn't mean it should interfere with you.

Gosh, this is an easy one. Family first.

If the wedding time is such that you can make it to the race the next day, bonus points.

Gosh, this is an easy one.  Screw the cousin.

With everything going on, the cousin won't even notice you are or are not there.  Send a nice gift and call it even.  Weddings where other people (besides bride and groom) are invited are a joke anyway.  All they care about is the gift, so send them one and save yourself the trouble and expense of attending.

Cousins are not really family anyway!

Whoa, I didn't see that they're actually on SEPARATE DATES.

C'mon now ... man up and do both. Nobody ever sleeps the night before a big race, anyway, so just make sure you rest up well the week before.

Have to agree with Yanti on this one.

Doing the HIM 5 weeks out would be sacrificing a 20 + mile run (sure your are adding a little warmup swim and spin but still)  Doing the HITS 2 weeks out  would be in your taper and you probably only had 12 or 13 scheduled for that day any.

Get your long run in, enjoy the wedding then go to the Hall of Fame HIM.....

But since you already decided what you are doing and asking what others would do based on your scenario I guess I would do what I recommended to you

wait, you aren't registered for the race yet?

I'd still consider going to the wedding but clearing out early. Let them know NOW that you have a race planned the next morning and will be leaving after the ceremony.

I'd go to the wedding, and if possible do the HIM - but it would be a bonus and the wedding a priority.
I actually had a similar situation last year except with a friend's wedding over what was meant to be my 'A' race of the season. Chose the wedding over the race and I'm glad I did, I had a lot of fun. There are always more races, but weddings are unique with the people who go.

Just tell the cousin you'll be sure to be there for his second wedding.

Hi all. I have a dilemma.  I want to do a 1/2 Ironman on 9/2 this year.  However, my cousin is getting married on 9/1 approximately 5 hours away.  Do I off the family and do the race or keep the peace and goto the wedding?

Offing the family seems like a totally disproportionate response to a scheduling conflict, and the fact that you've posted about it on a public forum will likely prevent you from attenting either race.
