Pre-race routine:

Registered and asked Joe, the race director the water temp. Joe, turned around and flashed his calf to reveal "cold" and he was right. I did this race last year and the water was 54 degrees. Today was no different, I suspect it was closer to 50 degrees. Unloaded the bike and pumped the tyres to 50lbs F & R. Set up transition, hit the head and got body marked.
Event warmup:

Decided I had to test the water. It was frigid, literally. Swam a 100 briskly and headed over to hear to the meeting. Jumped back into the water afterwards and swam to the run start (about 100yd run to enter the swin start).

Comments:

The water was cold. Could not get my rythm. Did I say the water was cold, it was freezing.
What would you do differently?:

Get a warmer swim cap, full wetsuit with heater coils.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Was a bit dizzy in transition, happened only once to me last year. Not sure why. Once I was on the bike dizziness went away.
What would you do differently?:

Dont get dizzy

Comments:

I bonked the first 2 miles not sure if it was the breakfast, cold water or dizziness. But, the tank was empty...felt better afterwards and finshed strong. But I think here is where I lost my time comoared to last year. Was hoping to improve, but didnt happen. 1-1 2006
What would you do differently?:

Better breakfast, stronger bike start.

Comments:

Really felt strong on the run, even going up the hill. Think the track work is really helping this year. Finished strong and kicked hard the last 1/2 mile. Nice to see Im not scared of trying to empty the tank at the end. Had a hard time doing that last year.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, oranges, streching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Clearly the swim temp and the bonk in the beginning of the bike. Was shooting for 2:00 - 2:05 ended up adding 2 minutes to last years time....really disappointed but it is a great race and a lot of fun. I'll be back...

Event comments:

Great race lots of fun...need a better approach to the swim and climbs.

XTERRA, eh?  Excellent job.  Next time, EAT and don't bonk on the bike!

BTW, that's balls cold...holy crap.  Even I'm not that crazy!

Great job considering the water was freezing! I've found I get dizzy after finishing the swim when the water is really cold...
