Overall Rank = 95/135
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 9/14
Pre-race routine:

Late start for this race at 9:30 AM. So I got up at about 6:15, ate some cereal and skim milk and drank some G2. Ate a Honey Stinger protein bar while setting up my transition. NO SHOE ISSUES!
Event warmup:

Ran about .5 miles with Tracy's Doug and swam about 300 yards.
Swim
  • 36m 46s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

I swam 2800 yesterday, so I just worked on being smooth and long in the water and not bobbing my head. There was a surprising amount of contact throughout the course. No sun was nice. Could have kept swimming.
What would you do differently?:

Adjust my pace for the shorter distance.
Transition 1
  • 04m 7s
Comments:

Took time to put on arm warmers. Did not have the bike in the right gear so took a little long to get going.
Bike
  • 1h 29m 34s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 17.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Back stiiffened up about 4 mile in. I had to nurse it along. Did not hammer the down hills as much partly because of my back and the wind was an issue with the new wheels. I did not feel comfortable in aero going over 30 mph on the down hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Run
  • 1h 03m 27s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Fell apart as my hamstrings tightened up. Had to walk some uphills. Tracy helped cheer me on and ran with me on the first turnaround.
What would you do differently?:

Lose more weight. Do more Yoga regularly.
Post race
Event comments:

Had a good time. Weird to be racing this distance, especially when training to go long. I think this only my 4th o;ympic. A hard course on a cold day.

Nice report.  Good to see someone else's numbers for that race.  I'm in your age group and while not as fast, agree with you on many points.

There was a lot more contact mid swim than right at the start (particularly as ALL the women passed me).  But the water temp felt good.

True that on the wind!  Particularly on the first half.

This was my first Olympic and second Tri ever, so I don't have much fancy stuff, just a basic, 8yo no frills bike.  For the ride, I wore a long sleeve tech shirt under a short sleeve one and that felt fine.  On the run, I stripped those off for a fresh short sleeve tech shirt and that was fine there too.  I thought the weather was almost perfect.  Some sun would have been nice.  At least it would have made me put on the sunscreen that I brought.  My neck is regretting that decision right now.

Considering B2B 1/2 iron in October or the cheaper Jordan Lake 1/2 iron in September also by FS.

Overall, I'm pleased with FS's organization of the race and found plenty of support, a clearly marked course, and acceptable food afterwards.

I forgot to set my GPS watch, so I have to wait til the final results are posted with times for each portion, then I might do a race report too.

Nice race!

No kidding! The wind and temps were definitely factors on race day! I have to say the hills were also nothing to sneeze at, both on the bike and run!

Nice job overall!

Nice job keeping it together and keeping it in perspective! This is practice.  There is one big race you have to nail come November!

Good job Doug.  Sounds like a good day out on course and more progress towards the end goal.  Keep up the good work - IMFL is getting closer!  :-)  BTW - I think cold weather makes everything hurt a bit.  I find it very hard to loosen up on those days.
