That being said.....on a $500.00 CL bike Lance Armstrong could even beat FredD. Tongue out

Blasphemy.

Lance has been looking a little chunky.

I do understand the point you area trying to make. However, the basic road bike did not make the fast guy faster and the aero kit did not slow down the slow guy. My point is that if the winner wears the aero stuff he goes even faster which may or may not matter to anyone, but he didn't win because of the older road bike, rather he won despite it. It's not an 'either-or' argument. And I can assure you I can out bike most people on this site on an old road bike or on my full-on aero setup try bike with aero helmet. I'm just faster in the latter setup.

I've won races on my road bike with clip-ons. you can do it

as lance would say "its not about the bike"(even tho his bikes are the best)

Off topic, but that's not the context Lance was referring to in "it's not about the bike".

He had A beer....as in ONE?  No wonder I'm not getting faster. Laughing

Moonrocket - 2012-04-30 10:32 AM The whole idea of this would make an awesome Top Gear inspired triathlon challenge.  Take 10 pros give them 2 days and $500 to get a bike off craigslist and then compete in a HIM.  That would probably make really funny television.  Like the mopeds in Vietnam on Top Gear.  Maybe $700 bucks to buy everything they needed for the race (shoes, clothes etc.)

I am a huge far of Top Gear and the episodes have gotten me through many hours of the trainer. I would go one better and give them the $700 but they would have to shop at walmart

x2! And that Vietnam episode is the best ever. I could watch it over and over. But don't get me started on that craptastic American version of TG. I couldn't even make it through half of one of those shows...

This "season's" opener in India challenged Vietnam...  but yes Vietnam still ranks among the top.  Although the one across Louisiana/Alabama area was sadly funny too

I ride a used Mercier Cycles Aero TT that I bought on eBay 4+ years ago for $500. I won my AG in my last race. Admittedly, I've invested another $1,500-$2,000 in fittings, pedals, shoes, and race wheels over the years, but even taking away the $1,300 wheels, the results would have been the same.

IMO, given equal engines, fit, and aero position, there is very little performance difference between a $500 frameset and a $5,000 frameset.

I've raced on my dads bike (same as the one above, mercier aero tt road bike), once with and once without aerobars on it, and done well (1st and 4th overall in the two races). You can go fast on a lower priced bike, but the aero stuff does help.

LMAO about a Vietnam/India challenge on motorbikes. I don't watch the show (tri training has replaced TV viewing in my life), but pretty sure they must be training on my long ride route. We draft off the slower ones on the busy stretches (and no, this isn't bragging, unless going 16 or 17 mph. is some amazing achievement). BTW if anything I said earlier came off as bragging, I apologize, just stating a fact. Our competition probably isn't as deep here as in North America--the climate doesn't lend itself to endurance sports.  But the thread didn't specify the size, caliber, or location of the race, or winning OA for men or women. Geez--if a tri bike would give me five minutes of speed, I'd be tempted to rob a bank.

Sure, I guess so.

If you're passing them around, I'll take one. You're the bomb. Embarassed

I've won on my $700 bike, passing and lapping many more expensive bikes.  I regularly place in the top 10 for bike splits in all sort of races.

The bike would have to bought off eBay; everybody knows CL bikes are slow.
