I've be training since January, looking forward to my first race this weekend. I'm healthy, happy, and injury-free. Until last night, that is...

I was playing Ultimate, and a jacka$$ on the other team tackles me from behind in the endzone. Yes, Ultimate is a completely non-contact game, which is why I am so pissed off.

I got hammered into the ground pretty hard, and messed up both of my knees (nice high-quality soft-as-pavement field we were playing on didn't help.) I spent the night icing both knees, but my left one is still somewhat swolen and is causing me to limp a bit.

I'm mad that I missed my run workout this morning (hah! I would have never thought I would actually get mad over NOT running :-) and I'm just hoping that it's minor bruising and I'll be OK by Sunday.

Oh how I hate stupid people.

Yeah, you didn't mention what shape your knuckles are in today after the pounding you must have given him. I hope you at least reminded him of the "Spirit of the Game".

Sorry for your injury. Hope it heals quick.

Had a close call myself last night. An certiain part of a huge oval (black tarmack), at my park is designated for cyclists (walkers have a very nice path of their own). In the middle of the oval is all grass big enough to fit several foot ball fields in.

Not only do a lot of them shoot out from behind trees but many keep their dogs off leashes as they play catch with them, on or right across the bike path.

I never stop or swerve for the dumb ones like that (except for kids, elderly, etc.). I've hit dogs, people, etc. Most of them know better than arguing when they clearly have been fooling around like...........fools.

Man, I can't tell you how many times I've had something important coming up, and gotten injured playing sports right before it. Totally sucks.

I usually avoid any unusual activity for at least a week before an event. I find that if I play something new or a sport that I don't regularly play, I will invariably get sore/hurt from doing things the old body isn't used to. I just skip it. After all, as much time as we train for really only 1% of our time racing, it's just not worth it.

That being said, just spend time each day moving and gently stretching the joint, and hopefully you'll be fine.

If it makes you feel any better, my first race is the weekend after this and I just pulled a muscle in my back yesterday morning - pushing my stupid Grand Caravan when the battery died with it stopped in a no parking area. Argh!

It will heal. It will heal.

Nah, the way we do things here in Canada is...

Well, OK, maybe not :-)

I honestly thought I was fine and played a few more points before the swelling and pain started to kick in. By the time the pain was enough to sideline me, beating the snot out of the guy would have seemed harsh...

Usually, all the weed smoked before playing ultimate takes the edge off of the hostility.

What went wrong, do ya think?

Just got back from my first run and bike since Sat. It was pretty painful. Took a bad dump during a crit last eweek and got pretty skinned up. I'm thinking at the time, "no worries skin grows back".

Noticed it really hurt to even jog across the street later that day. "No worries" I'm just getting stiff.

I go in for xrays later today for the hip and shoulder.

Three B races in the next 10 days. Next race isn't for another 5 weeks. Trust me I am going to be a lot more careful in the next 7 weeks. Better being beat by your own stupidity I guess

I hear Advil and patience heals all.

I played ulty for years and was constatly injured. Ganted most of the time it was jsut due to the fact that all the cutting in ulty kills your knees and ankles (the reason I don't play anymore). That really sucks about the tackle. Completely goes against what ultimate is all about. I started playing in the first place because of how awesome the sprit was and how great the people involved were.

Have you palyed in Ho-Down? I loved coming out to Calgary for that tourny. I think it is one of the best by far that I have ever been too. Ahh... Free beer and craziness It was my first as well, back when we were allowed to camp inside the velodrome. I knew I was in for trouble when I arrived the first time and saw about 40 naked people in hottubs and lots of kegs lined up

Must have been laced. The guy probably got hungry and hallucinated that he was a big ham steak...

Nope, I've never actually played a tourney here in Calgary, although I played plenty when I lived in Ottawa (let me tell you about the time my team placed 7th in the national championships... hah!)

The guy was the typical over-competitive Ultimate newbie - plays other sports well, probably started playing ulty last year and is pissed that he's not doing better and ends up playing really aggressively.

I found 3 more bruises today (two on my hands, one on my shoulder) from the same guy. Brutal. I think he was pissed that I blocked everything he tried to throw or catch the entire game, and scored 4 points in a row when he was on D :-)

I hear ya about the injuries - fast cuts + crappy fields = lower body injuries galore.

Do you happen to know what taking a "bad dump" means to most of us dirty minded folk?  I'll give you a hint - it doesn't mean "fall" as I'm sure you intended.

Put it behind you! It is time to race and that is where your focus should be.
