Subject: High Cliff half distance

Hi everyone.  I'm looking to do my first half distance event this year and am about 95% on High Cliff.  If anyone has any experience on this it would be greatly appreciated.  This will be my A race for this year and I'd like to know about as much as the event as possible.  I'll likely see nearly none of the bike / run course ahead of time.

I see the results from 2010 had a LOT of good talent while 2011 wasn't nearly as stacked.  I wonder why?  Maybe there was some money in 2010 that didn't exist in 2011 I don't know.

Please let me know your experiences / any course details I should know.

I see the bike looks pretty easy except for the climb out of the park with only about 800++ feet of climbing.  How is the pavement?  How is the trail quality for running?  Paved trails or gravel?

Thank you.

Wow, that's a lot of race reports!  Thanks.

I'm still wondering if the trails are gravel or what?

Maybe only about 15% of run is on pavement. The rest is trail.  The actual surface varies from softer (but not too soft) trail through the wooded sections to grassy areas to hard rock. (not too much of this).  In other words, a little bit of everything.  Except for first (and last) big hill, the run is fairly flat.  I have done this race a number of times and would recommend it.

Love the trail and all the shade..hate the grass and the full sun.  Overall, I like the race and I'll be doing again this year.

Never been any money at High Cliff that I know of. Last year I know some of the fast guys were injured or just doing other races.

Bike has a big hill right out of transition, but the rest of the course is gently rolling hills and pleasant.

Can anyone tell me how the swim waves are started?  It appears the website says the waves are by bib number.  And bib number is given in the order in which you registered.  So that tells me the waves are not seeded by age group?  Seems wierd and if that's the case I haven't registered yet so will be in the last wave darn it.

I was thinking of doing the sprint but see some people saying the swim is shallow and some people were walking?  Add in some hills and I'm second guessing it now.

The water is a little shallow only at the beginning, you have to watch out for the rocks.  Overall a very pleasant race, despite the monster hill out of transition.
