I know there's variation and all, but I'd really like to hear from anyone else whose max HR is near mine just so I know I'm not a total freak.

I'm 34, 5'8, 154--more of a lab than a greyhound Wink  Resting HR first thing in the morning is usually within a couple beats of 70.  I did a 5k time trial and hit a personal best of 27:52.  My average HR for the 5k was 190 and peak was 200.  Today, I did two miles @ "goal 5k pace" which was 8:23 (I aspire to a 26 min. 5k!).  One of them was mostly uphill and I pushed to the point where I don't think "desperate gasping" would be wildly off-base.  I considered my 8:40 a success, given the terrain.  I checked my peak HR:  216.  Yes, my doctor knows what I'm doing (training for IMFL 2012) and is supportive.

Is anyone else at the upper end of the HR chart or am I truly alone here?

I thought about titling this thread "Am I going to die?"  but having to qualify to the point where the answer is in doubt made it not worthwhile...

It's not that weird. My max HR is something around 210 or something. I freaked out when I first saw that because I'd always been told 220-age and trust me, I'm wayyyy older than ten. Did some "google research" and found out that it's not uncommon or bad. It just is what it is.

PS. I'm almost 35, 6'2" and 163lbs.

Run more.

Worry less.

You might have some hummingbird DNA in you but not a big deal.

I used to worry about my HR as well. I have seen mine up around 215 during a race. Everyone here has assured me it is nothing to worry about. I think you will be ok as well.

Yeah, I've spiked 220 in a 5k (really blew myself up in that race).  Keep running, don't worry about it.  As your fitness increases, you'll start running at a lower and more sustained heart rate.

Thank you all!  I do feel better now.  Particularly liked the "hummingbird DNA" part   As long as other people have experienced something like it, then I'm not screwing up (too badly).

For what it's worth, this IS an improvement:  When I started running (technically, moving faster than a walk would be correct), I couldn't run in Z1--that would be a walk.  Now I can.  Proof of improvement is that I can run slower....yeah buddy!
