Subject: Training Obstacles - Advice Needed

So at present I find myself in the lovely country of Afghanistan, and all I can do in terms of swim, bike, run is hit a treadmill and an exercise bike, and this will be the case until I return to the states in December of this year (hopefully).  Anyone want to send me a PM with the best exercises to do and some training routines that I can do with free weights, a treadmill and an exercise bike?  Thanks,

Bruce

Thanks for serving (assuming that's why you're there).

To state the obvious:

Exercise bike:  ride it.

Treadmill:  run on it.

Weights: low resistance, high reps.  anything that works shoulders, lats, triceps, plus stuff to counterbalance that.  And core.  If you can lay your hands on some stretch cords you can do dryland swimming.

Personally...I would focus on strength training, plyometrics, muscle imbalances, and recovery. I think that there are enormous benefits to doing these things and without the proper triathlon equipment, it may be more beneficial to you. Once you start training in the States again you will be ready to hit the ground running and hopefully avoid injuries or setbacks.

Thank you for your service and good wishes for a safe return.

I like the HIIT ( high intensity interval training) such as bodyrock. I also heard that insanity is good.

You took the words right out of my fingers.

In the absence of everything, just work hard.  Sounds simple, and it is.  Just work really hard.  I dont miss my time in the "sand box."  Good luck over there.

Here's a good reference for core ST specific to swimming:

Lots of good stuff, and a good amount of exercises that you don't need any equipment for.

I can't think of anything to add to what has already been suggested, but something to think about: If you have the time/patience, try and document everything you do. What worked well, what didn't work so well, and then you can write an article for BT and help others such as yourself who are limited by location and equipment for an extended amount of time.

I'd get some TRX(like) straps... Lifeline USA Jungle Gym XT is what I'd recommend... functional strength, core, etc.
