Pre-race routine:

Migraine. Actually, I showed up at quarter to 7 to get a good transition spot, but they changed the flow this year so all spots are equal. Then I started to get a migraine, which essentially ends my day. Somehow I got lucky, took some meds the second I felt it coming on, and was able to relax and it went away. Otherwise I just hung out and waited for my swim heat.
Event warmup:

Nothing really. Jogged around the parking lot once.
Swim
  • 09m 10s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt like alot of work. My heart rate was super high and my breathing was terrible. My 9:10 time includes probably 15 seconds getting to the timing mat from the pool. I was hoping for faster, around 8:45 out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, it just wasn't a good swim day.
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

I was hoping for faster, but with the poor weather I chose to put on a shirt, which ate up 15-20 seconds. This is my second race with the shoes pre-clipped, and I thought it went really well. In fact, another racer left transition just before I did who was also pre-clipped, and I was able to get into my shoes and pass him while he still fumbled with his.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 35m 52s
  • 12.3 miles
  • 20.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went really well, about as good as I could have hoped. I knew in my head that I had to finish the bike course in 36-37 minutes to have a shot at meeting my overall time goal, and I did. Putting in the miles and work is paying off, I'm very happy with that.
What would you do differently?:

Eventually I'll get better at hills and go faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

I waited too long to get out of my shoes and couldn't get my right foot on top of my shoe, rather it was on the pedal with the shoe underneath. Not ideal. My racking spot was crowded in with others' poorly placed bikes so it was hard to get mine onto the rack. My shoes could have gone on faster. I was hoping for well under a minute here.
What would you do differently?:

Correct all of the above.
Run
  • 21m 24s
  • 2.8 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

The run went pretty well, I was hoping for sub-21 minutes but I'm still very pleased with that time. I didn't wear a watch so I just ran as fast as I could. My heart rate was through the roof and my breathing labored, but that was part of the plan and I just had to go as hard as I physically could because it's only 20 minutes of pain.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder. For me to run 7:39 splits is unreal fast, so I'm simply happy with that.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate a banana, drank some gatorade and warmed up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing in particular, I'm just not that fast, yet.

Event comments:

I am super excited and happy with my results this year. I finished this race last year, my first tri ever, in 1:19:41. So yes, I shaved almost 11 minutes off my time. My big goal for today was to go under 1:10 and I nailed that. The only goal I didn't hit today was top 10 in my age group (I was 13), and there's only so much I can do to control that. My time would have gotten my top 10 last year, what can I say, it's a stronger field this year. I took a ton of time off my bike and run, a small amount of time off my swim, and my transitions were a wash. I'm feeling good about my general level of fitness right now and am looking forward to the rest of the season.

That's a great race, and a great start to the season! Remember, it wasn't just an 11 minute improvement, it was a 14% improvement, which is pretty darn impressive. As you mentioned, there is little you can do about placing, given that it's dependent on who shows up. The only thing you can control is your own performance, and you have put in the time and effort over the year. You absolutely nailed it! congrats!

Great race! I am glad you managed to duck the migraine.   I think your results are great in all categories, it must be a really tough AG.
