Age Group Rank = 4/8
Pre-race routine:

Not a lot, ate a bagel, had a cup of coffee, and drove to the site.
Event warmup:

Swatting insects. Seriously, it was insane. Jogged back and forth to the car a few times.
  • 18m 26s
  • 704 yards
  • 02m 37s / 100 yards

I have been working really hard at swimming and this was my first OWS of the year. Unfortunately, I cannot stay on course or sight properly. I swam OK, but I was all over the place, to the point where a kayaker had to get me back onto the course. I bet I swam a lot more that .4 miles.

In reality I am still faster than I was last year!
What would you do differently?:

Lots of OWS practice, lots of work on sighting and navigating around buoys. At least I'm no longer fatigued, and I can work on sighting now that the water is warm enough for OWS practice.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s

191/234 on T1. Not good at all.
What would you do differently?:

Practice, practice, practice. I'm losing a full minute goofing off in T1.
  • 59h 32m
  • 20.5 miles
  • 0.34 mile/hr

It was great! One of the best bike rides I've done yet. The Garmin Edge 500 turned itself off during the swim and never picked up the Powertap, so I had no cadence or power data. It isn't really necessary, but I like seeing the data after the race.

Only got passed once, passed a bunch of people. Felt great the entire ride. Pacing was good, might have been able to go a little harder on the out leg.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, other than learn how the Garmin works. Nothing new on race day, right?
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s

153/234 for T2.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU. Seriously.
  • 31m 36s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 54s  min/mile

Not my fastest run, but I did get into a decent groove and felt strong the whole way. Finish was a lot of fun, I passed some 20-something with about 300 yards to go and he took it as a challenge. Wound up in a flat-out sprint to the finish, crowd was yelling at us the whole way. Passed him about 5 yards from the chip mat. Afterwards he shook my hand and said how great it was to be pushed like that at the end. I told him you're welcome, now I gotta puke :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than more training. I was able to average a 7:24 pace according to my watch, which is about what I expected based on my recent 5k times. Felt really good the whole way, so it pays to be a runner!
Post race
Warm down:

Water and checked times. Sprinting at the end was tough!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim and transitions. happy with everything else. I am amused by this question though, training is always the limiting factor in my ability to go faster.

Event comments:

Met up with the rest of my tri team, cheered a bunch of them finishing, checked times and we found that three of the girls won their AG's. None of the boys placed :)

The bugs were horrible, we had a club picnic planned but canceled that, it was just too nasty. I soaked myself with bug spray but it didn't help, I think the gnats saw it as seasoning.

Typical gross muddy NJ lake, but I liked the bike course a lot, and the run was completely flat.

Nice race.  Those bugs were totally out of control.  I have been itching my legs nonstop since Saturday.
