No e-mail, but newsletter mentioned the option will be available on Monday. So, logged in and chosen Baggage. Printed out my bib number and ready to go. I am at wave # 2 starting 10:05 A.M.

Considering poncho, maybe it will be 2013 modelling collection hit, don't throw it away.

I'm in the same wave- green wave #2 at 10:05.  I'm in corral #36.

Does anyone know how long the ferry ride is to Staten Island?  I'm on the 7:15am ferry and I'm wondering how long I will be waiting around for my corral start.  I wouldn't think it would be more than a 30 min ferry ride and will probably be waiting for about 2 hours, but I've never done this race before and really have no clue.  YIKES!  What does one do for 2 hours to kill time??

Another thing I just realized is that daylight savings is the morning of the race so we will need to remember to set our clocks back by an hour.  So in reality, my body will *think* I'm running at 11:05 instead of 10:05am.  I think I'm going to start waking up and sit around for a few hours and start my long runs around 10 or 11am to get my body into a routine.  It would be nice to get used to running later so on race day I don't feel all out of whack.

Drinks strong coffee and gets pumped up probably. My corral is # 25, and scheduled on 06:15 ferry. I just hope it won't be too cold. The time will pass quickly, once we come out of the ferry probably.

Correct. The ferry is a short ride (~30mins) but you should arrive to the ferry early as there will be a crush of people trying to board. I would not bank on getting on the ferry you are assigned to unless you arrive early. In past years you could get on an early ferry as nobody checks your slotted time. After the ferry ride you will board a bus to the Fort/start. The bus ride could be quick or it might be a slow ride depending on race-day traffic.

Just buy the NY Times and bring a book/magazines to read before the start. You will prob end up meeting a few new friends and will pass the time together.

I dont think anybody mentioned that once you are at the staging area you should be prepared to sit on grass/concrete. Might not sound like a big deal but if its cold/wet it might be a horrible experience for two hours. That NY Times will provide a nice mat to place under you when you have to sit on grass/concrete. Some guys even bring a small piece of cardboard to lay down.

I also figure a few trips to the porta potties and waiting lin line will kill a good portion of the time

How are your preparations going?

I've ran 30k some 2 weeks ago, and plan to do 35k before the race. Being only my second marathon overall, my plan is to complete less fatigued, no cramps, smarter nutrition strategy and below first marathon time.

I've been tri training over the summer, with a running emphasis (~45 miles per week). I just raced at the World Championships in Vegas, and now I'm trying to cram in 7 higher mileage weeks. I should be able to get in four 60-65 mile weeks with two 20 mile runs before a two week taper.

I'm staying in Brooklyn, and planning on hiring a cab to get me to the ferry in the morning. I also checked off the 'no baggage' option, as my wife will be meeting me near the finish with some clothes.

I know that "hills" are very subjective so it's hard to really know from person to person.  I've looked at the elevation profile for NYC and I think I get the jist of it- the bridges are hills and Central Park is rolling which will be tough, given it's the last few miles of the race. Am I missing anything?

I'm just wondering- how hilly is NYC?  Are they steep hills or more like long/graduals?  Or a mix of both?

I've been training on hills and my 20 mile run had 1,600 feet of climbing. I'm hoping that's enough to prepare me for NYC.   I hope it's the right kind of hills because that makes a huge difference as well as the placement of the hills.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  I'm just getting a bit nervous- not many long runs left until race day!  I hope everyone's training has been going well!

Nothing is truly affordable in NY unfortunately. JackRabbit Sports is great, they have a location on 14th St off Union Sq, one on the Upper West and Upper East, and one in Brooklyn. SBR is higher end and more expensive with an attitude to go with it, but they are a true triathlon store.

Any veterans know what time you should expect to get to the ferry if I am in the first wave that starts at 9:40am?

Do you guys think the race will still take place with all the damage that Sandy has caused? I have done the training, and want to race, but there are probably more important priorities than a running race in that area right now.

Much too early to tell. We'll know a lot more in 24h or so. If there's any possible way to run the race, they will. It would be a huge lift to the city. My concern at this point is travel--it's going to be hard to accommodate the thousands of runners and spectators if the damage to the transit system is as bad as they're saying.

I am scheduled to fly out Thursday afternoon.  If that flight gets cancelled I doubt I'll be able to reschedule and get there in time for the race.  My biggest concern is being able to get another flight.

Also, it's my first trip to NYC and I wanted to be able to enjoy the city. I'm not sure even if the marathon takes place if I will get to enjoy being a tourist- with some areas still probably needing clean up.  It seems like it will be stressful for me to get there and I hate to start out a race like that.  I also don't want to shorten up my trip.  If I can't fly out on Thursday then I am thinking about just deferring until next year.  I can find another marathon to run in a few weeks.  And I've been trying to run this race for years so waiting another year isn't a big deal for me.  Just a huge bummer.

So the marathon is still on, but airports are still closed. I guess I will find out today if tomorrow's flight is cancelled.

Do any locals know when the airports "might" open?  Also, I have no idea if the condo we are renting will have any power.  We will be in Upper West Manhattan.  Still trying to decide if I should go through with this or not.

I am going to NYC as long as they will have me and my booked hotel is open.  This city needs a lift right now and that is the least I can do for it after such a tragic event.  If we get to run around the city, that will be even more awesome!  Hope to see you all there.  I love NYC!

JFK and Newark are open in a limited capacity as of this morning. Laguardia might be a while--they had a lot of flooding. Electricity outages are still a problem downtown as well. They're saying that they hope to have the power back on by the weekend. The Holland and Brooklyn Battery Tunnels are still closed, but there are many other ways to get into the city. None of the bridges that the Marathon crosses have been affected.

Link to LaGuardia Airport Official FAA Status.

I'm planning on going IF my flight isn't cancelled (I fly into LGA) .  If not, I guess I will just be deferring to next year...

I think it was 3:30, but I am targeting closer to 3:40 now.  Somehow I lucked out, I got in through the lottery.

Thanks! Trying to figure out how they assigned Wave, Color, Corral.  I put in 3:27 (my McMillan predicted time based on my last race prior to registration) and ended up on Green Wave #1 Corral #15.  They don't even have a 3:30 pace group in Wave 1 - the only pace group is 3:15.  I'm planning on pacing a hair under 8:00/mile and see how it goes so I may see you around!

I'm heading up tomorrow morning, had to change travel plans and catch a train since the DOT requires 3 passengers in a car to cross over to Manhattan.  I'll be getting into Penn Station around 5pm.

Good luck everyone!!!

GO BT TEAM!!
