I tried to swim in open water for the first time this weekend; it is much harder than a pool, but while I'm swimming it seams I like it a lot more than a pool. when your in a big body of water, and your tired in the center of it what is the best thing to do? I'm thinking about swimming across the ressovor that I live on this weekend, and it about 1000 yards across.

Its pretty dangerous to open water swim by yourself.  That being said, I do it often but I hug the shore line so that I am always in relatively shallow water or can get there quickly.  I also wear a wetsuit knowing that it will give me the bouyancy I need if I get tired and need to rest.  Personally I hate swimming in a pool and only swim open water.

Relax your stroke.  Don't use up your energy fighting the water currents, your pool technique training will pay off.

I agree, swim with a buddy or local club.  Wear a bright colored cap so you stand out, don't need a boat, etc running you over because they can't see you.

If you get tired, turn over and backstroke or breastroke (although I am not a fan of the breaststroke, it seems like an energy waster for me personally).

BREATHE! There is this unusual phenomenon that occurs when you hit the water - you forget how to breathe correctly.  Slow down, relax, flip on your back for a moment, breathe deeply until you get your rhythm back.

agree with the others, if you're going to go it alone try to hug the shoreline versus swim across the middle.  I would also strongly recommend getting a lot more experience in groups or in and around the shoreline before attempting the crossing.

Also, if you do get tired and need a break just flop over on your back.

Let me be the ambassador and welcome you to the world of "zomg! Open water is a zillion times better than following that blasted black line".  Please stay a while - the water is great!
