Longtime BT'er and friend to many here, John Wright (jdwright), passed away yesterday, on his birthday.

As many of you know, John was an organ transplant recipient and tireless advocate for the cause. His health had recently taken a turn and this time his body could not match the fight in his heart and will.

I met John only once in real life, along with djdavey at the Peregrine Triathlon in Cedar Rapids, IA. But it was clear just from that one meeting John had a ready smile for everyone he met and was a devoted husband and friend. I know he touched a lot of lives through his advocacy for organ donation.

You will be missed, John.

Someday we'll meet again at the finish line.

I would say the best thing we can do, in John's memory, is to make certain that you let your family know you want to be an organ donor.  THAT is the best way to honor the memory of a man who touched and inspired so many.

Good point. I'd also recommend registering with Donate Life.   They direct you to the registry in your state and it will help reduce the uncertainty and hassle for your family if the time comes:

I've known John through BT for a number of years; there wasn't a time when he didn't have a good word, a thoughtful outlook, some encouragement for others. Remarkable man.

Thank you for making the world brighter, you will be missed.  Godspeed, John.

thank you!  I will do this. I've told my family, not sure it will actually happen. So do hospitals automatically check this?

My state allows you to officially register as an organ donor through the DMV when you renew your driver's license.  Maybe others have something similar?

I know very little else about this.  But at least in Minnesota, the company that handles organ donation at the hospital is called Life Source. (I know this because I have a friend who works at a major hospital in trauma areas.)   When I used Donate Life to register, it sent me TO Life Source.  So, I am assuming that has put my information directly in the hands of the people who will be talking to my family members.   I also have the donor box checked on my driver's license and have discussed this with my husband.

P.S. I think I did this initially upon the recommendation of John, on his blog or in a post here on BT possibly.

Whenever the subject of my death comes up (as in "what do you want to have done?"), my mantra has been for many years: Part me out, burn the rest.

Part of me will live on, the rest of me will give John a big high-five at the finish line.

Thanks for that.  I know I am registered through my State but I hopped on there to make doubly sure and reregistered.

Edit to add: I also just put that link up on my FB page and a call out to all my friends and family to register.

Sad to read this. I had talked with John about donation having lost a friend.

My friend needed a heart and was fast tracked as an urgent recipient. He waited for 18 months before getting matched. That's fast track!

Donate. The need is huge.

I am better off having known him. If not for some young woman's family honoring her wishes, I would never have known him.

God bless his donor. God bless John... because we have all been blessed by knowing him.

Eternal rest grant him, O Lord. Let light perpetual shine upon him.
