Has this ever happened to anybody?

I had a brick workout this morning on Atlanta's Silver Comet Trail. For those not familiar with the Silver Comet, it's a "Rails to Trails" project that runs from Atlanta to Birmingham. It's great for long rides and full of wildlife. It's common to see squirrels scrambling along side the trail and rather large snakes sunning themselves. In addition, the occasional bunny dashes in front of your bike.

I was cruising along at 23 mph in the aero position and barely missed a rabbit under my front wheel. However, the second rabbit wasn't quite so lucky. The poor critter made it between my wheels and was hit by the back wheel. I actually thought he made it until he flipped around the wheel and hit me in the back.

Needless to say, I will be scanning very carefully for snakes. I can handle a bunny flipping up on my back, but a snake will be a whole different scenario.

I've come close. The trail I ride has a bunch of bunnies, but even worse, if you show up at the right time it's 30 miles of lizards sunning themselves on the pavement. I probably double the actual mileage by swerving around them every third foot.

I have yet to hurt anything other than gnats. I'm sorry about the bunny--that must've been traumatic.

I used to run/ride on the Silver Comet for a couple of years and I don't recall seeing any bunnies. I've seen snakes and squirrels before.

The bunny up the back is quite gross though.

The only thing that comes close to your story is that I hit a seagull in my first car. The feathers and entrails got caught in my grill, it was gross.

So can you bunny hop from aero bars at 23mph?? (sorry about the pun - not really intended)

I would definitly try if it was a snake.

It didn't happen to me but I have seen a squirrel run into the spokes before. Wasn't a very pretty picture.
