Subject: Training for 1st sprint... need bike advice please

Hi there,

I think I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum so I am re-posting it here in the "introduce yourself" section.  Hope that's okay!

This is my first post and I'm excited to introduce myself!

I am 32 years old, female, mother of two little boys.  I've been an exclusive runner for a few years.  Most recently, I ran a half marathon in December and since then I've really just been burned out.  I still run 2 or 3 times a week but not the distances that I used to.  I also very recently added swimming and weight training to my exercise regime and I'm really enjoying the addition of something new!

I have decided to train for and compete in a sprint triathlon at the beginning of September but I still need to buy a bike!  I know someone selling their Canondale R600 CAD bike and I was wondering if any of y'all had experience with this type of bike and knew what a fair price would be?  It's at least 5 years old. I know nothing about bikes and realize I have much to learn! Would that type of bike be okay for training for my first triathlon?

Also, what does everyone think about training on your own vs. using a training company to help train you for your first triathlon?  Would love to hear any opinions!  Thank you so much!

I'll try to post a pic of the bike I am considering buying here.....

Hi, welcome to BT and triathlon!

I think you're getting some answers to your bike question in Tri Talk ...

As for self-training v. coaching, it really depends. Are you self-motivated? Are you TOO self-motivated and need someone to rein you in? Do you need to train with others (not all programs offer this)?

BT has really great training programs with a coaching option ... something to look into.

Hello there!  Welcome to BT and triathlon.  That bike looks like it's in good shape.  Does the seller's body profile match yours?  Height, torso, legs...  Gotta get pretty close when it comes to purchasing a bike.  It has to fit you, not you fit it.  =)

About training, you can train on your own or with a group.  Group rides are more fun but sometimes you can't make the meet ups.  Don't forget about getting a helmet.  =)

Thanks everyone!  It's a 47-48cm frame, previous owner was 5'0" and I am 5'4" so I am thinking it might be a little too small for me.  She is also asking $375 for it... probably too high for a bike that old, with no accessories.  I really appreciate the information!  Back to the drawing boards for me.  Thanks again!

I train almost exclusively alone and love to train alone.  Like said previously, really comes down to what you like.  Welcome to the forums..

Yikes!  $375 for that bike!  Your best offer should be $100.  =)  It won't fit you though.  Move on and visit your local bike store (LBS) and see if they can hook you up.  =D

qtzie - 2012-05-10 8:45 AM Thanks everyone!

Well, different bikes will fit you in different sizes.  I'm 5'6 and am riding a 47cm Fuji, perfect fit for me.  In a Cannondale I am a 50cm.  On a Trek I am actually a between a 52-54cm.  It is tough to call until you actually go and fit the bike.

Oh and I agree, less than $100 for that bike!  Laughing
