Pre-race routine:

got to race early, picked up my timing chip, hung out with my friends waiting for race to start, since it was a 9am start you could feel the heat building as we waited
Event warmup:

easy 10 min jog ~15 min prior to anticipated start time
Run
  • 1h 07m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

the start was delayed about 15 min; I think they were having trouble with the chip system, it was very hot standing at the atrt in the sun, I started off way too fast, about 1/2 mile into the race I found a friend and ran with her, 1st mile 9:35, I kneew I couldn't keep it up so I told her to go on, 2nd mile was 9:50, still too fast for me and for the heat; after that I really had trouble finding a comforatble pace; I took a few walk breaks but they didn't help, the damage was done, miles 4 and 5 were very rough, poured a ton of water on myself to keep cool, despite all that I still managed a PR
What would you do differently?:

not start so fast; not sure what got into me
Post race
Warm down:

pizza and beer at the post race party, won a t-shirt in the post race give aways

What limited your ability to perform faster:

poor pace planning, race temp

Event comments:

this is a really good race; nor sure what the problem that delayed the start was, lots of water stations and volunteers, good post race activities, most of my running friends do this race every year so we have fun together

Great race Sue! Congrats on the PR - that is AWESOME!! By the way, are you doing Marine Corps Marathon this year? Am I remembering correctly that you did it last year? Jeff and I just registered, I know it fills up quickly...let me know if so, maybe we can try to meet up again?

For starting out to fast you did awesome to PB is always fun!

You have as much fun with your running friends as we do with our BT friends up here. Come train, we'd love to have you here.

Congrats on the PR!  Look at it this way, you learn a lot about your body, what kind of pace you can hold, how to run in the heat, etc.  It's not something that comes naturally, at least to me anyway.  I'm still playing with my long distance pacing...work in progress.  As long as you had fun, that's all that counts!

Good job pulling through for a PR in spite of the heat and a fast start! You'll really nail it next time.

Congrats on the PR with that heat!!  If I remember right, there really isn't any protection from the sun on the course.

It really is a nice race, but didn't they start late last year too?
