I got a trainer last week and am loving it! I'm a little miffed at the number of setting I have at my disposal. I understand that there is much overlap in these setting but I'm curious as to how to determine the best resistance.

It seems like there is very little difference in resistance in the trainer settings...so maybe that is 'fine tuning'.

On a seperate note....it just occured to me that the younger generation does not grasp the full meaning of the term 'fine tuning' most having grown up with digital tuners. ;-)

Anyway, how do y'all set the resistance on your trainers? Also, how long do you usually train on the trainer.

Have a Tacx trainer (magnetic) where I can adjust tension manually.  I warmup with the tension on zero with most workouts on level 1 resistance.  Used Spinveral dvd's all winter with rides from 30-120 minutes.   Was the first winter of using the trainer.

Lesson learned after the first road ride of the year:  Next winter start training the legs on resistance level 2 as that should better simulate a road ride (pushing through wind and up hills).

Otherwise, was able to drop about 15 lbs over the winter with only trainer rides.

Have fun

I have a mag trainier, and I crank the resistance all the way up all the time and just spin in the lower gears. Lower gears = less distance = less wear and tear on the drivetrain and rear tire.

Sure, my bike computer doesn't read 1000 miles a month, but then riding a trainer is nothing like riding on the road, so I don't really care what the mileage is.

Cadence, intensity, and duration are the only significant factors. After that, ertman's drivetrain economics are as good a determinant as any.

I only have three "settings" on my Cyclops mag trainer, and I usually just keep it in the hardest one and work on my cadence and form in various gears depending on what ride I have scheduled that day.
