I have a few regular circuits I ride, but I have been thinking that they seem to always skirt the hills.

NO MORE!

Just for grins  I developed a new course in my area that avoided the flats in the valleys and along the rivers.  Up and over every big whopper I could find.

Up down up down up down.

OHHHHHHH my legs feel funny.

good job! personally whenever i see i hill while im training i smile and think "im going to be stronger and faster when i get past this thing".  i tend to push hills hard and recover on the down hill sections of runs/rides.  thats where the real cardio and strength building potential is.

I used to just do a nice flat section and could get some nice speeds.  Then did a half with crazy hills.  Got through it but it was brutal.  Now I incorporate flat and hilly rides.  So much better rounded as a cyclist, but I know what you mean.
