I'm not doing it this year, but I did it that last two years.  it is a mass swim start, but it is also a deep water swim start.  I never noticed it being any worse at the start than at the start of any other tri with no mass swim start.  it really wasn't bad at all.

Have fun!  it is a great course, I wish I were going back this year, but this year I have to eat hills for breakfast (training for IMWI) so Peterborough half it is.

The bike course has one reasonable sized hill on it - think one of the easier hills at lakeside -  the rest is just background noice.  The bike is flatter than the IMFL bike course.  First and only race I have every had a 30 km/hr bike split and it is a half IM, go figure.

The run is along a path beside the recreational canal.  There are a few small up and downs.  Elevation change isn't much, but the run is definitely not flat but is still not a hard run.  If you have done the guelph lake oly I would say the hills on the run course are similar to the hills on that course, but it isn't constant, there are long sections of flat and false flats on the course.

This is sarcasm, right?

Yes, Welland is VERY flat... the only hills for the sprint distance were over a bridge, over a RR crossing, and under a rail crossing. Welland is on the plateau above the escarpment... and it's pretty much flat all the way to Lake Erie. Perfect race to attempt a PR.

I have my PR from welland and am trying to break it at Peteborough this year.  does that make me crazy?

x2 on trying to set a PB in Peterboro

I set my 1/2IM personal best at Welland... by 1hr and 18minutes. Of course it wasn't just the course - fitness, experience and other factors play a role but if I was in the same shape for Peterboro as I was for Welland, i'd be happy finishing within 20minutes of my Welland time.

P.S. Welland 1/2 was my favorite race in 6 years of racing.

It was good to see you John - I'll see you first at Binbrook, and again in Welland. I'm not so sure I'll be doing much 'crushing' this year though I'm confident I'll have fun.

I've done peteborough before, I was on pace to get 10 minutes faster at welland last year and kind of fell apart at the last turnaround on the run.  I am in better shape now and think that it could be possible maybe just by a couple of minutes.  I would rather do welland but my coach wants me to do peterborough since it will be a better w/u race for wisconsin.

(plan - 34 minute swim, 1:30 T1, 3:10 bike (slower than last year), 1:30 T2, 2:10 run (zone 1 pace for me), PR of 3 minutes)

Looks like there will be over 400 athletes in the Half Iron Distance races in Welland! Great to see that so many people like the race and that athletes like K and her husband Tanker volunteer and help make the race special. Thanks everyone!

Last minute decision... 99% sure I am doing the half - looking forward to the weather forecast staying in the low 20's

You don't update your logs, so I have no idea what your training looks like.  So this is meant with no disrespect - but when are you actually training for your ironman if you're basically racing every week?  This seems very, very counter productive to me.

I use the races as great Brick work sessions, and still do 2 Bike Trainer Sessions and 2 Run sessions per week with 2 days off for rest/recovery.  Is working for me and I really enjoy the races so I am enjoying it and keeps me motivated. May not be the perfect training plan, but i am really enjoying it so far.

just my opinion, I think you need your long rides and long run.  Get your body used to that long 6hrs ride and 3hrs run.
