There may be some push-back from participants with this because of the issues Mexico and Mexican tourism currently faces in the public eye. My experience is that, without diminishing the seriousness of the challenges Mexico faces, those issues are largely seperate from visiting the country as an athlete/tourist to do an event.

I was at an event in Mexico recently and it was an outstanding trip all the way around. This will likely be a truly great event in a great setting.

Good news.

went there for 5 days a few years back - would I go back for an IM triathlon? Hell No! I would go back for a vacation triathlon consisting of sunnin, snoozin and sinnin - why waste a whole day of vacation at Los Cabos getting sunburned sweaty and dehydrated ( I did that without the race and the bike transport fee)

Los Cabos and Rocky Point are worlds apart, Tom, that comparison really isn't apt. Los Cabos is off the drug cartel radar and is much safer then Rocky Point.

This race without a doubt will be my new qualifier for Kona. Great time of year for me to train into, nice and early, and a sweet vacation spot for the wife. PERFECT. I will be the M45-49 AG winner at this race at some point.

Seriously, you think Rocky Point is on the "Drug Cartel radar"?

Not been my experience at all.

I think the point he was trying to make is that Los Cabos and Baja California Sur will be very safe for athletes participating in the IM.  And I strongly agree.

Hmmmmm,  Never been, wondering what the elevation on the bike and run would be?

Looks like a great place to relax after the race.

I like how they announce it and are ready to take entry fees but there is no information on the course or hotel/resort info.  Well done.

Well, a few drug related shootiing and murders in Puerto Penasco along with a travel advisory for US citizens over the past few years gave me that impression. I have been there 3 times to race the Rocky Point Triathlon and love the venue but to say this part of Mexico is perfectly safe is not entirely accurate. I also have friends who have been shaken down by the local police on the highway. Now los Cabos, I can't recal ever hearing about any of these issues.

Funnest tri I ever did was in Rocky Point. Sure the wind was blowing sand and it was like a scene from Scorpion King... but the after party with FREE tequila and beer with the DJ spinning tunes? Freakin rocked! Oh.. and not to mention the Slip & Slide finisher's chute.

I can also say is was the funnest triathlon my wife ever attended too (not a racer) for the same post-party reason.

Point... don't dis racing Rocky Point.

And RP and Cabo are world's apart. Cabo is even more fun, and actually a pretty place.

Yes, I know. I won the race in 2009. Still have the double magnum bottle of tequila to prove. We love the race, the area not so much. Sorry.

Here's the view from my hotel room in 2008.  Awesome beach, but that surf was always rough.

Rocky Point is ugly.
You should travel down the coast a bit further to San Carlos, my hometown. Voted in Nat'l Geographic's top 10 most scenic coastlines in the world. Only 9 hours from Fountain Valley  Smile

And we have a great Sprint tri every Fall  (been trying to convince the organizer to make an Oly too).

Bryan...Never said it was perfectly safe, nor is Tucson, Phoenix, or Albuquerque for that matter. All I was saying is that it being "on the drug cartel's radar" is not accurate- IMO.

i spend about 50 nights a year in Cabo with my job. i stay in town, outskirts of town, and in san jose...never had an issue with safety. the mainland mexico drug cartel activity has not made it to the baja...at least not that i have seen. It is a tourist town ONLY...not sure what the course routes will be but i do know the road between los cabos and san jose is not the smoothest road on the planet..there is a toll road now between the airport and the main highway which is pretty smooth. I will say this..if the locals come out like they do for the baja 1000 the crowd support will be amazing! Jb

^^^ This
Just last year there was a gun battle in a very nice mall in Cabo San Lucas. I'm not sure it was drug related... but, does it really matter? Regardless, I have been going to Cabo nearly every year since the mid 80s and have been going to Rocky Point for the Las Palomas Tri for the last three years. I feel safe enough at both locations to keep going back.
