Total Time = 2h 40m 51s
Overall Rank = 34/
Age Group = M 45-49
Age Group Rank = 4/
Pre-race routine:

Ate banana, 2 yogurts, bagel with cc at motel and drove half hour to race. Set up and got on shuttle to swim start. Lots of waiting. Got to swim a bit before my wave. Set up bike the night before with two gels and clif bar taped to frame.
Event warmup:

Not enough but there was enough waiting that it wouldn't have mattered much.
Swim
  • 35m 37s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

I go left. Every time. Left. Ended up swimming 1.16 by my watch. Stupid timing chip strap felt like it was falling off the whole time. Stopped three times to try and fix it. Pissed me off.
What would you do differently?:

learn to go straight
Transition 1
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Still having trouble getting shoes all the way on. I can get up and moving without trouble but getting all the way in is an issue.
What would you do differently?:

Get my feet in. Maybe not worry about gloves. I like riding with gloves but I don't really need them.
Bike
  • 1h 16m
  • 24.8 miles
  • 19.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't go out too hard. Was concerned about blowing too much energy early in the ride. Could have pushed it more. Climbed and descended well. The wind really killed the overall time on the way back.
What would you do differently?:

go out harder
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Nothing unusual. Things seemed to go well. No socks.
What would you do differently?:

I don't jump off moving bike. Not there yet.
Run
  • 45m 38s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Started slower than I needed to at around 8s. Again, worried about not having it at the end because I'd not done the distance before. But got stronger as it went with a nice negative split, finishing under 7.
What would you do differently?:

Could have hit it a bit harder early but not a lot. Probably could shoot for 7:30 in first mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking mostly. Lots of walking to get back to car and loaded up. Stretched about 10 minutes. Would have liked more. Ate a banana and a piece of a bagel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just reservation about fast start.

Event comments:

Not much at the campground in terms of facilities. Nowhere to change clothes after the race which meant I wore race clothes until we got to like Carroll Iowa or some such place. Pretty rustic out there. But the race course is good. There was a lot of confusion on the swim route, particularly the last bouy. I know some people missed it. Not sure what happened there. It wasn't a straight route which required a lot of navigation. High enthusiasm and friendly folks. I probably won't go back just because it's such a crappy drive from Sioux Falls.

Course: Kind of hilly really. In the campground and parts were a little steep. It was trails beginning and end with some confusing and sharp corners. Didn't like that. Two laps for OLY. That was fine. Actually didn't mind know what was coming on the second, allowed me to push the end maybe more than if I'd not run it once already.
