Anyone doing it?  I signed up for the Double, because I believe that anything worth doing is worth over-doing.  Any past finishers have any words of wisdom?

You would probably get more responses in the Colorado forum. I doubt it's a big ride outside of the state. I could be wrong. I'm doing it this year for the first time... the double never occurred to me... too close to my HIM... but if you are in shape to do the double, a HIM in 3 weeks is probably not a big concern to you.

I did it before they had the double. It's a blast. Well supported. And remember, your doing 3 passes, and for each 20 mile climb, and you've got a 20 mile descent.

Hold on and enjoy.

Sounds like plenty of time to cramp up. The times I have done epic descents, that is usually what happens. Just not used to holding the position for such a long time. That's MTB'ing though, so I'll see how this is.

I did it last year. "Just" the one way, east to west. It's a fantastic ride. Great climbs, and amazing views. Excellent ride support too.

Main advice: be prepared for sudden weather changes. And start early if you can to reduce the risk of getting caught in a storm. A storm came in last year when I was about 10k from the finish. It was a bit miserable, but I was fine, as I was on the flatter run in at that stage. But if I had been on the steep descent from Vail Pass at that point, it would have scared the hell out of me.

The first two passes involve far more ascent, but I found that Vail Pass is still fairly tough, coming after so many hours in the saddle. The first two descents are not technical. The third one has some slightly more hair-raising sections.

I'm very impressed that you're planning to do the double. That is hard core.

Oh yeah, and enjoy the watermellon at the top of Vail Pass.  After 100 miles it was the best food I've ever tasted after 100 miles riding.  Great times and a great accomplishment.

Thanks everyone for chiming in -- sounds like a great experience, and I am really looking forward to it.  I'm a Coloradan, so I'm used to our fickle mountain weather, but I'm still hoping to avoid rain/hail.

I noticed that they've banned aerobars this year, so I'll have to rent a road bike, maybe even one with a triple in front for Day 2 when I'm a zombie.

Powerman, I'll see you there!

No doubt, I didn't notice the ban... that does not include clip ons does it... I actually thought about taking them off anyway... not sure.

I did the Triple for the 1st time 2 years ago and the Double Triple last year, and am doing the Double Triple again this year Laughing.  I'm planning to leave around 5am again this year in hopes of avoiding the worst of the weather.  I recommend stopping at each aid station and taking your time eating and drinking just to give your body more time out of the saddle.  I carried arm and leg warmers, rain jacket and pants, windproof gloves -- and wore them all at some point in the ride.

There will be info sessions at REI, too, with experienced Triple riders.

I've ridden TBP five times. The last time I think was about five years ago and I was rained on from about the top of Squaw Pass until I hit the top of Vail Pass. It was a pretty miserable ride that year. First time I did it was the 2nd year of the ride...I think in 92 or 93. There were only about 300 riders back then and the bikes were not nearly as fancy. It's a fun ride but I don't much enjoy riding with large crowds...However, I have been tempted to ride the Double TBP.??
