353 | Subject: RE: Whats for breakfast? Here's the concept: You wake up with a liver filled with glycogen which is sufficient to fuel training at moderate intensity for at least 45min if not more. You also have stored energy in the form of fat not matter how lean you are. When you eat first, it stimulates your glycogen levels and your body immediately begins to use that blood sugar you just provided to fuel. And then while trianing if you take a gel or sport drink, you continue to fule that system. What you are not doing is allowing your body to begin to tulize fat for fuel as that system has been over ridden byu the carbohydrate system. By not eating and traing at a moderat eeffort for a moserate duration with no additional calories. your body has no choice but to use fat, thus becoming more fat efficient. That can help you loose weight and provides your body with a much more flexible energy utilization system. Foir a race, I eat before and during as I want fast burning carbohydrate but not in training, at leat not all the time. I will eat first if I have a very intense workout to do ot if I am going long and want to work hard. Ok, gotcha. Makes sense - esp the part about increasing the versatility of energy utilization. |

You can train your body to process fuels differently. You'll always burn the same calories Actually, that's not true (that you'll always burn the same calories). You can increase/decrease your basal metabolism by undereating. Your body thinks its going into starvation mode and thus decreases its calorie burn to compensate. So yes, to a degree you can stoke or depress your metabolism.
Calories is a measure of energy. It's got nothing to do with how you are processing fuel. You still need the same amount of energy, even in starvation mode. The difference is you have to steel the fuel from other sources, like muscle, because your body wants to store fat instead of burn it for energy while in starvation mode. |

You can increase/decrease your basal metabolism by undereating. Your body thinks its going into starvation mode and thus decreases its calorie burn to compensate. So yes, to a degree you can stoke or depress your metabolism. It's not a question of burning more or less calories, it's a question of what is the source of those calories. Carboydrate or fat. If you provide an immediate source of carbohydrate for you body to use, it will default to that. If you deny carbohydrate your going to use glycogne stored in your liver then fat. You can condition yur body to access that stored eneregy by training an a fasted state and as long as duration and intensity is managed, you can do so without sacrificing quality. The result is not only a more effieicent metabolism but one that is properly stimulated. And sometimes people confuse HUNGER with HABIT. |

I don't look at food as a reward, during the week it's a tool. But I also enjoy every bit of my healthy choices and on occassion have an indulgence for fun. You can't always assume people who choose to eat helathy are denying themselvbes happiness, quit the contrary in my case. |

Veteran 660 Northern Illinois | Subject: RE: Whats for breakfast? I don't think Bryan is skipping breakfast, he is simply having it after his morning workout. He has 3 meals a day plus snacks, it's just that the 1st meal isn't until after a workout in the morning and it's small (yogurt/fruit). I think a lot of us think of breakfast as a big meal with eggs and bacon, but it's really just the first food that we eat after we wake up from fasting (sleeping). |

LOL!! Yeah, my comment was mostly said in jest...I have a pretty clean diet as well. People always wonder how I can go my whole life "dieting", but like you, I enjoy eating healthy. And if done right, eating healthy taste much better than the alternative. With that being said, it's the Friday before a holiday weekend and I'm celebrating...Bring on the bacon!!! |

And it seems to fare pretty well with my training thus far - started in Jan and down to 8 min miles on the run and 1:45 100's. Not too bad for an over 40 woman methinks

I do a reverse pyramid for food intake -- enormous breakfast, middle sized lunch, smaller dinner. it's worked wonders for me both physically (from 240+ to 170 while training) and mentally as i still get to have a huge meal. That saying of breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper. today: massive 3 egg omelette with bacon, cheese, mushrooms, green peppers, almost full plateful of hashbrowns, then 2 slices of sourdough toast with butter I LOVE to eat. I get to eat like a huge satisfying meal everyday My lunch today will probably be a small sandwich and maybe a yogurt w/berries if i feel like treating myself Dinner will be very light, small piece of chicken and vegetables

Yep, you don't have to believe me even if it is a fact! It's a common misconception of the term though.
Bryan, I don't know how you do that in the morning. If I do a 20 minute strength circuit in a fasted state my stomach complains afterward, and it would take more than a bananna and yogurt to satisfy. Another example that YOU ARE NOT HUMAN!!
All this talk about breakfast has me craving my after long ride breakfast reward! spinach/cheese/tomato/mushroom omlette and 2 pancakes! mmmmmmmmmm |
