Sunny
Total Time = 2h 20m 30s
Overall Rank = 42/223
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 6/14
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30, had oatmeal and greek yogurt. Loaded the car and was on the road to walla walla by 5am.

Event warmup:

Got in the lake before the race, swam around the first buoy.
Swim
  • 16m 43s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim start was pretty rough. I did position myself pretty much in the middle of the pack.

Still, not too bad of a start. I found some feet early on and followed them for the first lap until the guy veered off course, then I swam solo.

It was a pretty conservative effort for me, although I still managed 14th out of the water. So I'm happy with the results.
What would you do differently?:

Take a more direct line to shore.
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

This was my first time racing with a wetuit. When I was practicing transitions I had some issues getting my wetsuit stuck onto my heels, but I had no problems during transition thanks to body glide!

I took some extra time putting on my GPS watch. I was going to stash it in my bento box and just grab it when I leave for the run, but I forgot my bento box. Also took a gel in T1 with some water which added some time.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out a better way to do my watch.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 24s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.52 mile/hr
Comments:

I passed two people about a mile after transition! It's a good day when I get to pass people on the bike.

I'm definitely making improvements on the bike, still, my goal here was 20mph average. There was some wind to fight, but it wasn't that bad. I was holding a 20+ average until the last mile or two, when I let up a bit.

I think on the out I was trying to push too high of a gear. Need to drop down a gear and stay focused on spinning. I mash too much when my speed starts to flag from hills/wind. I think I could have gained some additional time on the out route.
What would you do differently?:

Spin more
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

I felt faster than 1:06, although I didn't have the most advantageous spot.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster
Run
  • 43m 48s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

I was pleasantly surprised by this run! I got out of transition and started running. I could feel a little tweak in my calf, it felt like it was about to cramp up, but thankfully it didn't. I was focusing on my calf for a while, when I looked down at my watch and saw that I was heading out at a blistering 6:40 pace! I told myself to slow down, and I held a pretty steady pace the whole run. That was an awesome run for me! Almost the same pace as my standalone 5k from March!

I wasn't passed once on the run, except by a guy in my age group re-passing me. I think I passed about 15 people. I need to keep focusing on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Hard pass the guy in the age group to demoralize him, so he doesn't repass me.
Post race
Warm down:

Water and oranges and a lot of standing around in a daze.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, definitely my best performance in a race. Need to keep up the training!

Event comments:

The BBQ chicken was pretty good! Just need some utensils....
